Review: TacPack – June Edition

Hopefully you are familiar with the concept of TacPack by now. If not, you can read the reviews of the previous TacPacks for some background. I recently received the June TacPack and this one had some big time potential, especially for a lucky few. Here are the details…

IMG_0888

HexMag Advanced Tactical Grip – This grip features the well known HexMag hexagon pattern and is adjustable for grip angle (17, 25, and 33 degrees). It feels nice in the hand, looks good, and seems to take stippling well which is good because it feels a little slick.

Live Fire Emergency Fire Starter and 40% Coupon Code – Live Fire’s fire starting products are excellent. If you received the June TacPack, I suggest you use the Emergency Fire Starter as a chance to try out Live Fire. Then go buy several more with the included 40% off coupon code to tuck away in your packs, vehicle kits, and where ever else you need them. This is a really nice intro to some great gear.

ABKT Boot Knife – This is going to be one of those toss-it-in-a-kit-and-forget-it items for me. It is a cheap knife but the sheath seems to hold the knife well, the edge sharpened well with just a few passes on a stone, and it should be right at home as a cheap beater that I won’t cry about when I break it while throwing it at stumps. This is really the first inclusion in a TacPack that has fallen flat for me.

CRKT Getaway Driver – This little gadget is great. It’s core functionality is as a screwdriver but it carries standard screwdriver bits on board allowing you to swap the bits as you see fit. You could match the bits to the fasteners you need and then tuck it away on your gear, on your bike, in your range bag, or anywhere else you might need. It will even open your bottles. This thing is useful.

TacPack LE Patch – Everyone likes patches.

Seekin Precision Post Card of Winning – I wasn’t sure what to call this but it is a scratch-off card and a solid inclusion. Several of these cards will be instant winners of gear from Seekins Precision. Every other card will be a discount code that has the potential to save you some serious coin – well over $100 on a complete upper.

Stickers – There were two stickers included in the box. My tool chest will be sporting them shortly.

.999 Silver Coins – Two lucky boxes were shipped with silver coins from GMR Gold.

Wrap Up

The boot knife fell flat in this one and a lot of the value of the box is in the coupons which some may not like. That is the nature of these boxes and the surprise is part of the appeal. I’ll use the coupons and get pretty good value out of them. The Getaway Driver is something I never would have purchased for myself but after getting one in this TacPack, I like it so much that I bought another one. The Seekins Precision winners and those who received the coins are probably dancing the streets. Those are some very cool giveaways.

Check out TacPack and get in line for the July box which promises to have some big time giveaway items from Bull Moose Tactical.

RE Factor Tactical Poster Series

You may remember the Warry Night poster from RE Factor Tactical that we recently covered here on JTT. Well, that was just the first in an entire series of posters that feature a well known work of art with some RE Factor Tactical style. There are 4 posters in the series: Colonial Maritime Raid Force, OCONUS Lisa, Predator Scream, and the previously mentioned Warry Night.

Check out all 4 at RE Factor Tactical.

Black Arch Holster Protos-M

Black Arch (formerly SHTF Gear), just took the wraps off their newest holster – the Protos-M. This is an all-new modular holster design but as you might guess from the name, it shares some lineage with the Black Arch Protos holster in that is also features their patent pended 3/4 Hybrid system. This means that the kydex fully encloses the trigger guard on both sides to give the positive click-in and click-out retention you like about kydex with the comfort of a leather backed hybrid.

PPS-Triple

From Black Arch:

Logan, UT – June 28, 2016 – Black Arch, a manufacturer of hybrid holsters, announced today the release of its latest product, the Protos-M. Designed to be completely modular, this holster is intended to meet the needs of those who carry daily, train hard, and compete to win.

The Protos-M is able to adapt to any mode of carry (IWB, OWB, and AIWB) by using one of three interchangeable backers. This means that you can carry your gun in different positions and levels of concealment with a single holster. The Protos-M uses their patent-pending ¾ Hybrid system, which means that you will experience the exact same draw no matter which backer you use (note: each backer is custom designed and only compatible with a single model of gun).

More than just a modular holster, the Protos-M is engineered for all-day carry and built to last. Precision-molded kydex, hand-finished leather, and stainless steel components all come together in this new design to create the highest quality holster possible. Completely redesigned backers provide a smaller footprint and make these holsters incredibly concealable and comfortable.

The Protos-M will retail for $94.95 with one backer included and is currently available for pre-order online at blackarchholsters.com. Individual backers will be available for $34.95. The complete Protos-M system box set will retail for $209.95, including one shell, three backers, extra hardware, and accessories.  Pre-orders will begin shipping Friday  July 8th. All Black Arch holsters include free shipping and a lead time of only 2-4 business days.

Mini Kit MK-7 Range Kit

I am really, really good at getting all the way to the range and then realizing I forgot something. That is why I have been using a Triple Seven Gear Mini Kit MK-7 as a range organizer since they were first released.

You can read my previous review on the Mini Kit MK-7 if you are unfamiliar with it but basically, it is an organizer for small items like medical supplies, EDC items, or range tools in this case. It is built to be compact enough to go in a cargo pocket or backpack and durable enough to stand up to daily use.

I have an excellent I-Shot range bag (rest in peace I-Shot) that can carry a ton of stuff but lacks organization for small items. I actually prefer bags that way because a large empty space is more versatile than bunch of smaller spaces. The large space lets me fit larger items or simply drop in an organizer to contain small items. That is where my Mini Kit MK-7 range kit comes in.

The kit remains loaded, full-time, with the tools that I am likely to need on the range and I can add other specific tools as needed. My kit consists of a Multitasker tool, a Combat Optic Tool, Sharpies, a pen, a notepad, bits for the Multitasker, a Torx wrench in a size found commonly on optic mounts, a laser bore sighing tool, and a Leatherman Micra.

If it is a quick range trip, I can just grab the Mini Kit itself. If I need the ability to carry more gear, I just drop the Mini Kit into a larger bag with my other gear. Any bag that I drop the Mini Kit into becomes a range bag.

I use these Mini Kit MK-7s a lot of different ways but this range kit is my favorite.

Two New Releases from TOPS Knives – Quick Skin and Fiel

TOPS Knives just released two new knife designs and both have plenty of curves.

Quick-Skin-flyer-s

The Quick Skin is a dedicated skinner with a very curvy, bull-nose blade design that TOPS calls “All-Belly”. This upswept tip design has been used effectively for more than a century on knives meant for large game processing. The .190″ thick 1095 steel blade is flat ground and features jimping near the tip for additional control on cuts that require the index finger to be placed along the spine of the knife. Blue/black G-10 scales and a kydex sheath finish out the package.

FIEL-FLYER-S

The Fiel is a dagger but with more junk in the trunk. It has far more curves than you are used to seeing on a double edged dagger design. These curves allow it to not only stab and pierce like a dagger but also be used with more slashing cuts. It is designed to be carried as a last ditch defensive option and comes with a kydex neck sheath that is Tek-Lok compatible (not included) for belt wear.
