News from Joe Watson Knives

Joe Watson Knives was busy at Blade Show. The knife maker used the time to iron out the details of two very interesting collaborations.

HiTS Karambit

The HiTS Karambit, a collaboration with Darryl Bolke of Hardwired Tactical Shooting, is the first karambit that Joe Watson Knives will offer. Joe and Darryl (who happens to be the “DB” that Strider fans will surely be familiar with) already have another successful collaboration under their belts in the original HiTS Knife. The new HiTS Karambit is designed to be functional for both novices with basic targeting and striking training and for seasoned users who can push the design to its limits

The new knife has been heavily influenced by Steve Tarani in design and use. Tarani’s Aluminum Control Device makes a great training version for this knife.

Shivworks/Watson Pushdagger

Many of you have already seen the pushdagger that was mentioned on these pages several months ago. At the time of publication, Joe told me he was seeking the input of Craig Douglas (AKA Southnarc). That has now been made official. Douglas is a gifted trainer and has designed several successful self-defense oriented knives himself. He knows how to make push knives work. With Joe Watson’s design and Craig Douglas’ input, this knife will definitely be on point.

KEY-BAR Titanium Comb Insert

I have mentioned KEY-BAR here on these pages before. It is a device that organizes your keys into a pocket knife-like tool. One of its biggest strengths is its versatility. It can hold just about anything that is roughly key shaped and that opens the possibility for developing cool little gadgets specifically for KEY-BAR… cool little gadgets like the Titanium Comb Insert that KEY-BAR just started offering via their website. Look for new additions to KEY-BAR’s capabilities soon.

ATAT Development Group

Vince Buckles, previously of Red Jacket Firearms and currently with Mesa Kinetic Research, has launched a training company called ATAT Development Group. Given Vince’s background with the AK family of carbines it should come as no surprise that AKs are more than welcome in his courses. His vision was to start ATAT so that AK and AR shooters could receive training side by side without one group feeling like they were slowing the other down. He and co-instructor Greg Carlson are able to give parallel instruction during their courses on both popular carbines, addressing not only the universal fundamentals of shooting but also the intricacies inherent with shooter’s choice of carbine.

ATAT Development Group operates out of a large facility in southern Louisiana. They offer a variety of courses included general carbine courses, AK specific courses, and others which are in development. For more information about courses, visit the ATAT Development Group Facebook page.

Thordsen Customs Featureless 3 Gun Rifles

Thordsen Customs is making two purpose-built 3 gun competition rifles to show off their soon to be released billet lower receiver and FRS-15 – a featureless rifle stock that can help AR-15 owners work within the assault weapons bans that some of the less free jurisdictions still have in place. While the purpose of these rifles may just be to serve as a showcase for Thordsen Customs products, I absolutely love how this shines a massive spotlight on how ludicrous it is to ban what amounts to cosmetic features.

Think about this for a moment… The anti-Constitution authors of these bans are trying to somehow handicap the use of rifles like AR-15s. Yet, these rifles which meet their regulations are built from the ground up for competition that by its very nature places a premium of delivering fast and accurate hits. It shows just how ineffectual assault weapon ban legislation is.

It warms my heart to know that people in these ban states may still be able to get their hands on effective self defense tools thanks to companies like Thordsen Customs.
