Work Sharp Combo Knife Sharpener

Work Sharp is known for their power sharpeners but they manufacture some useful manual sharpeners too. Their latest sharpener, the Combo Knife Sharpener, combines both powered and manual in the same tool.

The Work Sharp Combo Knife Sharpener features an abrasive belt-based, powered sharpener with angle guide much like their other powered sharpeners but it also features an angle guided ceramic hone. Both the powered and manual sharpener components have a fixed 25 degree sharpening angle. While this is Work Sharp’s first sharpener to include both powered and manual sharpening methods, it is also their simplest to use.

Unlike previous sharpeners that had adjustable angles and used progressively finer belts to hone the edge, the new Combo Knife Sharpener uses only a 120 grit belt and the honing is accomplished via the manual ceramics sharpener. There is no set up because there is only one sharpening angle which makes this the easiest to use Work Sharp yet and that is saying something because previous Work Sharp powered sharpeners are extremely easy to use.

It is also their most affordable powered sharpener. The MSRP is just under $60 and their sharpeners are usually easy to find well under MSRP. You can check out the new Combo Knife Sharpener on the Work Sharp website.

BRC AR-15 Magazine Carrier

The new Black Rhino Concealment (BRC) AR-15 Magazine Carrier is now available on their website. I have had one of these for more than a year for testing and I can say that, after all that time, it is my favorite kydex AR-15 mag carrier.

There are two things that really set this magazine carrier apart for me. First, it is extremely compact. It has a fold over design and a Tek-Lok mounted directly to the back which keep its quite narrow compared to two-piece designs. It is also cut shallow which coupled with its versatile retention method helps it fit a wide variety of magazines including 20 round mags. I mention 20 round magazines specifically because some carriers are too deep and do not present enough of the magazine to get a good grip on them, if they even accept them at all. That isn’t a problem with the BRC AR-15 Magazine Carriers.

The second thing that sets these apart is that retention method that I already mentioned. This carrier uses friction to retain the magazine but the friction is applied via a rib that runs from the top of the carrier to the bottom. This allows the retention to feel consistent regardless of the type of magazine being carried and makes it very easy to achieve the desired level of retention via the adjustable retention screws.

These are a great piece of kit. I like them so much that, now that they are available, I’ll be purchasing a second one. Check out the new AR-15 Magazine Carrier at Black Rhino Concealment.

MDT LSS Chassis for the Ruger American Rifle

I recently wrote about my experiences with a Ruger American Rifle Ranch chambered in 5.56 that I like quite a bit. I also own a Ruger American Rifle chambered in .30-06 and have shot several of these rifles belonging to others. They have been solid performing rifles across the board and seem to be an excellent value. After that Ruger American Rifle Ranch article, a reader sent me a picture of his Ruger American Rifle based predator hunting rig in an interesting chassis – the LSS from Modular Driven Technologies (MDT).

I was familiar with the LSS Chassis but I didn’t know that it was offered for the Ruger American Rifle short actions. The LSS is already somewhat well known as an affordable chassis system for a variety of rifle actions but now it is offered for one of the most affordable bolt-action rifles on the market. An affordable chassis for an affordable rifle with an established pedigree of accuracy – that sounds pretty good on paper.

The LSS has the potential to correct two issues that can hold the Ruger American Rifle (RAR) back – the stock and the magazine. The Ruger American Rifles have the typical flimsy, plastic stocks found on budget rifles in this price range. The RAR gets away with it because of Ruger’s “V” block bedding design. They shoot well with the factory stock but shooters are seeing improvements in consistency by switching to the more rigid and truly free-floated LSS Chassis (according to the person who emailed me and several online reviews). These stocks also allow the RAR to accept AICS magazines instead of the standard RAR rotary magazines. This represents an improvement in quality and capacity.

Additional features include the ability to mount accessory rails for lights, lasers, bipods, etc. and the ability to accept AR-15 grips and buffer tubes for use with AR-15 stocks. The chassis is machined from 6061 aluminum and is relatively light weight compared to other chassis on the market. It is available with Black or Flat Dark Earth Cerakote finish and comes with everything necessary to mount the action. It does not include a magazine, grip, buffer tube, or stock.

The LSS is also available for a number of other actions including other budget options like the Savage Axis and Mossberg MVP. Check out the LSS from MDT.
