New GAMMA+ Rifle Plate Replacement – The SIGMA Project

The TAP GAMMA+ ballistic plates have been extremely popular over the last several months thanks to their lightweight, performance, and their extremely reasonable price. I posted about them in one of the most popular posts ever on JTT – High Value Armor Set Up. Unfortunately, there was only a limited supply of these plates and they are already becoming very scarce.

GearSnake recently posted a history of the GAMMA+ plates that is very informative and wrapped up the post with a rumor about a new plate that is in the works to replace the GAMMA+ called the SIGMA. I reached out to Ray Bellia at Body Armor Outlet and was able to get even more information. This is officially no longer a rumor.

Body Armor Outlet is behind the new project. They worked with a manufacturer to reverse engineer the GAMMA+ plates and improve them. They will also be the exclusive distributors for the new plate and it will retail in the $300-350 range. The plates are currently being tested and marketing is slated to begin in about a month. I have no information on the improvements at this time but I will keep following the story as it develops.

Why We Train: Pass It On To Your Kids

One of the most important aspects of firearm ownership is properly passing on this heritage and mantle of freedom to the next generation. Of course, the first and most important step is to properly instruct your own children.

Imagine yourself in the following situation: armed home invaders are inside your residence and you have retreated to the bedroom with your children and have attempted to block the door. However, despite your best efforts, the brigands force their way inside, start shooting, and strike your 11 year old boy in the hip. Those seem to be nearly insurmountable odds, but this 11 year old boy has plenty of fight left in him. He was able to shoot one of the home invaders in the neck, critically injuring him and causing the other to flee.

They say “Don’t Mess with Texas” but I think there’s more to it than that which brought about this amazing end to the story. I don’t have any details on this incident besides the brief overview released in the news story, but I’m betting somewhere out there is a very proud papa who properly trained and equipped his son.

While bed wetting liberals around the country couldn’t possibly understand the rationale behind providing firearms for children and training them how to properly use them, I for one am very glad to hear this story of a family where the torch of freedom is being passed. Children are usually a lot more capable than we give them credit for. Range time and responsible firearm ownership being taught in the home is a great way to strengthen relationships and harness the abilities of our children. Say a prayer for this family and injured young hero, and take every chance available to be part of creating a lasting legacy of liberty in your home!

Review: ZAGG invisibleSHIELD

I have used a ton of different clear screen protectors in an effort to get more mileage out of my electronics, especially the ones that I use outdoors. For the most part, they were all found lacking. They would either peel, shrink, or discolor. Then I found the ZAGG invisibleSHIELD. They aren’t the cheapest screen protector on the market, but they are the first one that I have found that actually works well enough to be worth any amount of money.

I have one on my cell phone which has been in my pocket for more than a year with no signs of distress. The previous screen protector that I used started peeling in days and quickly had pocket lint stuck to all the edges. It was a mess.

I put them on all of my GPS units as well. I really enjoy orienteering and these units can really take a beating. The plastic screens that GPS manufacturers use scratch and scuff easily. It only takes a couple of days of use before the scuffs can start to make the screen less readable.  The invisibleSHIELD shrugs off scuffs and scratches easily that would otherwise damage a GPS.

They are extremely clear and do not seem to change the readability of the screen that they are protecting. In fact, they can enhance readability in some cases. It seems to fill in shallow scuffs. I have a GPS with some scuffing on the screen that can’t be seen through the invisibleSHIELD.

Installation is easy and, unlike most screen protectors, the invisibleSHIELD comes with everything you need to install it yourself (a spray bottle of lubricating solution, a lint free cloth, and a small rubber squeegee). I even keep the lint free cloths so I can tuck them into my gear. They are great for wiping down binoculars and rifle scopes in the field.

Electronics from GPS units to smart phones to tablet computers are becoming more and more common in the field. These items aren’t cheap so it is prudent to protect them. Check out the ZAGG invisbileSHIELD screen protectors.

Patch Collecting: 2 Cent Tactical Patches

2 Cent Tactical is the best thing to come out of Canada since poutine (and that is pretty high praise). Ryan and company run a great blog that is full of fair reviews and solid pictures. They also happen to have a killer logo that looks great on patches and were kind enough to send me a bunch for my collection. I especially like the glow in the dark versions.

Be sure to check out 2 Cent Tactical. You can purchase your own 2 Cent Tactical patches at EDC Canada.
