Getting What You Want Part 2: Ebay

This is the next installment in out series on how to beat panic buying. We call it Getting What You Want!

Ebay is always controversial among gun owners. Some claim that they are anti-gun. Some say that they just minimizing their liability by limited what can be listed on their site. I will leave it up to you to determine whether you want to support Ebay or not. Regardless of how you feel, it can be a good place to find things that are otherwise hard to find.

Don’t wait for auctions to end! Everyone is watching those and you probably don’t have the time or patience to sit around and wait. Some people have sniping (entering a bid at the last moment) down to a science but I just can’t spare the time. So, I tend to sort my searches on newly listed items and look for deals on “Buy It Now” type sales. This way you stand a chance of being the first one to see an item. You can save a search and check it a few times daily if you really need to find something. Consider using Ebay’s mobile app to stay connected.

I should pass on a word of caution. Ebay prohibits the selling of some items and during all of this panic, many sellers have been listing items that are prohibited. Educate yourself as to what is within the rules as Ebay lays them out or you may find yourself open to a scam.

If you stay within the rules and apply some strategy, you might just find what you need to finish your newly acquired implement of liberty on Ebay.

Review: PWS Triad

In the time that it takes you to read this sentence, 10 new AR-15 muzzle brakes/compensators will have come to market. That may be a slight exaggeration, but there is certainly no shortage of options currently available with new ones coming frequently.

The PWS Triad is one of the more unique devices to come down the pike in recent history. It lacks the multitude of small holes or large side ports of most devices that claim to help control muzzle rise. In fact, it looks like a fairly run of the mill 3 prong flash suppressor. So, can a device that looks like a flash suppressor perform like a compensator? Read on.

PWA Triad

Overview

The Triad isn’t a compensator or muzzle brake. It is a flash suppressor that helps control muzzle rise. Most hybrid devices (devices that both suppress flash and muzzle rise) tend more toward a muzzle brake in terms of design and function. The Triad is more like a flash suppressor in terms of design and function.

The flash suppression is accomplished via 3 large prongs not unlike other flash suppressors on the market. The muzzle rise reduction is accomplished by extending the slot between the prongs at 1:30 position (from the shooter’s point of view) back a bit further. I am sure there is also some internal shaping/magic that also helps.

Observations from Use

There are really two ways to judge the Triad. You can judge it on its flash suppression and on how it reduces muzzle rise.  I will address each separately.

The Triad is a good flash suppressor. It is not quite as effective as the best flash suppressors on the market, but, remember, it has an additional trick up its sleeve. I would say in my limited dusk testing, that it suppresses flash better than an A2 on a 16” barrel. It is a bit better performing than something like a YHM Phantom. It sounds like I am downplaying its performance as a flash suppressor but that is actually quite good – better than any other hybrid device that I have tried. I should also note that it doesn’t ring/ping like some pronged flash suppressors.

Your impressions of how effective the Triad is at controlling the muzzle will likely vary depending on your skill level as a shooter. Those who do an excellent job of controlling the muzzle rise of an AR-15 through their use of grip and stance will find that the Triad may actually force the muzzle down a bit. It seems that devices attempt to steady the muzzle one of two ways – they either try to trap the muzzle in space (by venting gases out both sides or fairly evenly around the device) or vent gases up to force the muzzle down. The Triad is definitely in the later camp.

I actually liked it quite a bit. While it doesn’t keep the muzzle as steady as something like a PWS FSC556 would, it does offer an extra degree of control without any real additional sound or overpressure… or at least none that was noticeable to the shooter or those beside the shooter. That is the real story here. PWS has managed to create a device that helps control the muzzle without all the negative side effects. That alone makes this a noteworthy device to me.

Wrap Up

The Triad isn’t the best performing flash suppressor. It isn’t the best performing compensator (it isn’t really even a compensator at all). However, it is one of the best functional combinations of the two that I have used. This is an impressive device in terms of its all-round performance. If you are looking for a device that offers some muzzle control, but flash suppression and over-pressure/concussive blast are a concern for you, the Triad should be on your list of devices to try.

I got my PWS Triad from Brownells.com.

AlphaOneNiner RECON ONE on Kickstarter

RECON ONE Colors

AlpaOneNiner is trying to get a very, very slick bag called the RECON ONE off the ground on Kickstarter. The RECON ONE is a bag designed to carry a large tablet like the Apple iPad. It features mil-spec materials used in the construction throughout and various organization features that make it well suited for travel and EDC.

The RECON ONE also has one very innovative feature that really sets it apart – a removable tablet caddy/organizer. The removable tablet caddy/organizer sits in the interior of the RECON ONE where it serves as organization for the entire bag but when you need a portable work station, the insert can be removed and attached to an airplane seat back.

Check out the AlphaOneNiner Kickstarter Page for more details.

News from GWACS Armory

GWACS Armory CAV15 MKII

GWACS Armory is one of the few manufacturers that has managed to keep their AR-15 lower receivers, the previously reviewed CAV-15 MKII lower, in stock and shipping briskly. In fact, they have black lowers in stock right now and shipping within 3 days. Now they are riding their momentum into a number of incremental expansions that mean that we will be seeing good things to come from GWACS Armory for quite some time.

Chris Collins

Chris Collins

One recent expansion is the hiring of Chris Collins. You might know Chris from the History Channel’s Top Shot but he also has served in the Marine Corps, served as an instructor with United States Shooting Academy since 2009 and serves as the Director of Training with NextLevel Training. Chris is also the Director of Education for the Association of Defensive Shooting Instructors. Chris will have direct input on many of the current and upcoming GWACS Armory products.

GWACS Armory has recently announced that they are looking for customer input on their current products, products that you would like to see them carry, and their upcoming CAV-15 MKIII… that’s right. The CAV-15 MKIII is coming and it will incorporate several improvements that users have been requesting. I don’t have a timeline for you yet but you can contact engineering@gwacsarmory.com to share your input.

GWACS Armory will also be greatly expanding the products that they offer via their online store. Most noteworthy among the products are complete rifles built on the CAV-15 MKII and eventually complete custom upper receivers too. The complete rifles should be available soon. I will have more details and pricing information for you when it becomes available.

GWACS Armory CAV15 MKII Buttplate

Additionally, one of my favorite things about the GWACS Armory version of the CAV-15 MKII lower receiver was the excellent low-profile buttplate made from hard anodize aluminum. Its aggressive texture really locks it into your shoulder. It is available for purchase separately since it will also work as a shorter, lightweight alternative to an A2 buttplate on an A2 buttstock. GWACS Armory also says that a trap door version of their excellent buttplate will be available shortly as an upgrade to their lowers or for purchase separately.

Finally, GWACS Armory is anticipating that they will have various additional colors in stock sometime in mid February. These colors include Flat Dark Earth, OD Green, and the surprisingly popular Zombie Green.

Check out GWACSArmory.com and the GWACS Armory Facebook Page for more information. Remember to use the coupon code “triggerjerk” for 5% off of your CAV-15 MKII lower.

Getting What You Want Part 1: “In Stock” Threads

My inbox has been getting hammered with emails for the last month from people who are looking for magazines, bolt carrier groups, upper receivers, lower receivers, ammo, and other items that are in short supply right now. I am doing my best to keep up with the emails but the truth is, you have access to most of the same information that I do. So, in this series called Getting What You Want, I will pull back the curtain on what I do to find things that are in stock so that you stand a better chance of Getting What You Want.

If you can’t find enough PMAGs to keep your new AR well fed, can’t find a bolt carrier group to finish that new build, or can’t find an upper that doesn’t cost twice what it should… stay tuned.

One of the best places to find information about what is in stock and where is on internet gun forums. AR15.com and other gun forums have several active threads where users identify various vendors who have specific items in stock. These threads help people pool their research resources and cover more ground in the search for in stock parts.

Bolt Carrier Group Thread on AR15.com

Upper Receiver and Upper Receiver Parts Thread on AR15.com

AK Magazine Deals

These types of threads not limited to AR15.com and those listed here aren’t even the only ones on AR15.com. Many of the various gun boards have similar threads that can help you find what you are looking for or help others find what they are looking for during this time of panic buying.

There are several ways to monitor these threads so that you can be notified when something is posted. Some forums will let you subscribe to a thread with an instant email notification whenever something is posted. Some forums also have RSS feeds on various threads so you can add them to an RSS reader to receive nearly real time updates. You can also just do it the old fashioned way and just check it a few times a day.

If there is a thread that you are watching, feel free to list it in the comments below.
