Blue Force Gear Horizontal Ten-Speed Pouch

Blue Force Gear just released the new Horizontal Ten-Speed Pouch that they have already been showing at trade shows. This pouch is a lot like their well known and excellent Ten Speed Triple M4 Mag Pouch in materials and appearance except, as the name implies, it holds the magazines horizontally. This turns the entire pouch 90 degrees from what you are used to.

BFG states that this has two key advantages. First, it speeds reloads since the magazines have to travel less distance and they will have to be turned/twisted less by the user to reach the final orientation necessary to insert the magazine into the mag well. Second, it frees up space on your plate carrier – two full columns in fact on a typical plate carrier plate pocket. That means you have space for a small GP pouch, a compact IFAK, or even a traditional mag pouch with flap retention.

I have had hands on this pouch for a few weeks already and it works quite well. You just mount it on a plate carrier with it open to your support side. The mags are now oriented so you can easily establish a “beer can” grip and move right to the mag well of your rifle. The most notable downside that I have found is that it makes it a bit tougher to access magazines with your strong side but it is still VERY doable and still fast.

I am not sure any other company and their materials could pull this off. Kydex or a nylon/Kydex hybrid would be too bulky to afford the space savings. Nylon alone wouldn’t have the necessary retention. Blue Force Gear’s Ten-Speed pouches hold magazines tenaciously thanks to the mil-spec elastic construction. Their design and materials make this work. The mags aren’t coming out unless you want them to.

The Horizontal Ten-Speed Pouch works best on a plate carrier that lacks a cummerbund flap but it is flat and flexible enough to work on plate carriers that have them.

A pouch like this is different. It will likely be met with skepticism but I have spent enough time with it to be very intrigued. It opens up some interest possibilities.

The Dappers are Back!

Blue Force Gear’s (BFG) Dapper line of excellent hook backed pouches are back! BFG has always had one of the most extensive and functional line of hook backed pouches available but they recently discontinued the entire product category so that they could redesign and upgrade them. I have had hands on all of the new Dappers and I am happy to say they are better than ever.

The biggest changes that you will see across most of the line is the use of One Wrap as the backing which is very functional since it allows you to overlap pouches slightly. The entire line is also available in BFG’s Wolf colorway which looks great and serves as a lighter background to make small items easier to find inside your bag.

There are still more Dappers to be released other than what is already listed on the website. Much of what is currently available are BFG’s Ten-Speed Dappers which makes use of heavy-duty elastic to form the pouches. These are some of the most versatile organization pouches available. They can hold the magazines that they are designed for or be used to hold things like markers, chemlights, first aid items, radios, GPS units, cell phones, food items, flashlights, and tons of other stuff.

You can check out all the new Dappers at Blue Force Gear’s website. Hopefully, the return of the Dappers means the return of BFG’s excellent backpacks is not too far off.

Great Gear: Blue Force Gear Dump Belt Pouch

I have been using the Blue Force Gear Dump Belt Pouch for about a year now (I had one before they were available for general sale) and I need to take a moment to sing its praises. The Dump Belt Pouch is the new belt compatible version of Blue Force Gear’s Ten-Speed Ultralight Dump Pouch. The only real difference is that the Dump Belt Pouch makes use of BFG’s new laser cut One-Wrap belt mounting system rather than a MOLLE compatible backing. It has the same ultralight nylon pouch material, the same easy to access grab tab, and the same super compact form factor thanks to the Ten-Speed elastic front panel. This is one of those cases where form and function come together in a really neat way.

The pouch is so compact (smaller than a pack of cigarettes) and mounts to the belt so easily, that you will find yourself using it in new ways. I especially like it for when I am practicing with my handgun in normal concealment clothes because it is small enough that it doesn’t change anything on my belt. It certainly works well to hold magazines in various states of depletion but I have also used it to gather golf balls that were hit into the woods behind out home, carry water bottles while hiking, keep small tools nearby while I work, gathering tinder for a fire, pick brass on the range, pick pine needles and pine tips for tea, and probably other uses that I have forgotten.

It’s like the compact size of the pouch and the new belt mounting system turns it into something even more versatile than a typical dump pouch. It is more handy because I am more likely to have it with me. The Dump Belt Pouch is a dump pouch that you will find more uses for because it stays out your way when you aren’t using it.
