Tactical Handyman: Ultralight Scissors

I always try to keep a small set of scissors handy because they are useful for everything from gear repairs to first aid. The problem is that most small scissors are either expensive or junk (or both). They either lack the durability necessary to be useful or they are impossible to use if you have normal sized hands.

SwissCard Scissors

A few years ago, I was going through a box of stuff and found a couple of Victorinox SwissCards that I used to keep tucked in some EDC kits. I don’t recall why I removed them from my kits but I did remember that the scissors in these SwissCards are excellent. They are spring loaded which makes them very easy to use even though they are very small. They also tend to be very sharp and they stay sharp for a long time. Perhaps best of all, they only weigh about 7 grams with a small piece of drinking straw (more on that soon) and are 3″ long and 1/10″ thick. In other words, they are small and light enough to pack into just about any EDC, first aid kit or hiking bag.

The scissors are spring loaded to rest in the open position, so if you are going to remove these scissors from the SwissCard to carry them on their own, you will need to find a safe way to store them. I use a small piece of drinking straw. The scissors slip right into the straw which serves to keep them closed. The straw seems to be more than durable enough for this application. It is also very, very light weight.

These scissors are widely available online as replacement parts for around $7 a piece. At that price, you can afford to pick up a couple to stash in all your kits.

Tools That Tame Taper Pins

I know a lot of you are building AR-15s right now. I recently got an email from a reader who was having their patience stretched thin by some stubborn gas block taper pins that they were trying to remove in order to install a new free float rail. They wanted to know if I had any tips. Well, in addition to saying something about getting a bigger hammer, I passed along these two handy tools…

The Brownells AR-15 FRONT SIGHT BENCH BLOCK is tremendously handy for 2 reasons. First, it makes it impossible to try to drive the taper pins in the wrong direction which can make a project go from bad to worse in no time at all (ask me how I know). Second, it does a great job of supporting the front sight base so that you can really put some elbow grease into driving out the pins.

Regular punches can work with taper pins but they frequently deform the ends of the pins. They also have a tendency to walk off the rounded ends of the taper pins. The STARRETT – TAPER PIN STARTER has cupped ends that let you really bear down on the pins with less fear of deforming them.

These two products will make your life a lot easier even if you rarely swap rails. Check them out at Brownells.com.

Apex Tactical Specialties Armorer Block

Apex Tactical Specialties has released their Armorer Block for the S&W M&P and GLOCK line of pistols.

Apex Tactical Amorers Block

The Armorer Block is designed to secure your M&P or GLOCK handgun while you replace or remove parts. It has 2 moveable bosses that allow the frame to conform to all sizes and calibers of GLOCK and M&P handguns. The block has a series of slots that allows pins to be driven out while it holds the frame. It also has slots that allow you to anchor the base of the striker modules of the both the M&P and GLOCK for easy disassembly of the modules and a slot that can secure an M&P trigger to make trigger bar replacement easier.

I think they should change the name to the Apex Tactical Specialties Third Hand, because this is exactly what so many of us were actually wishing for when we wished for a third hand during a project.

Build Your Own Premium Lower Parts Kit

I have been getting a lot of emails regarding where to buy a truly top-shelf lower parts kit (LPK). My answer has been something like, it doesn’t matter because none of them are readily available right now. However, I have given it some more thought and I realized that the days of the complete lower parts kit may be numbered – or at least they should be.

Many people buy a lower parts kit and then promptly replace nearly half of it with aftermarket parts. Why not just start with the aftermarket parts you want and then fill in with high quality components where necessary?

Spec Your Own LPK!

If I wanted to build the best rifle I could right now, I wouldn’t buy a complete LPK. I would buy a few select components and then fill in the necessary small parts with quality components.

I would start with an ALG Defense QMS or ACT Trigger. These triggers start with the best components which is important because if something breaks in a lower, it is often part of the fire control group. This will take care of the following parts:

  • Disconnector Spring
  • Hammer Spring
  • Trigger Spring
  • Trigger Pin
  • Hammer Pin
  • Trigger
  • Hammer
  • Disconnector
The new Battle Arms Development BAD-ASS-ST is an excellent selector.

The new Battle Arms Development BAD-ASS-ST is an excellent selector.

Next, I would add a top notch selector from Battle Arms Development. Take your pick. The BAD-ASS, BAD-CASS, and Short Throw variants are all great. This would take care the following:

  • Selector
  • Selector Detent

Choose which ever grip you prefer. I prefer the UCWRG grip. The grip is often the first thing to go on a new rifle. You might as well start with one you like. This would take care of the following

  • Grip
  • Grip Screw
  • Grip Screw Lock Washer
Manticore Arms SAGE Trigger Guard

You could also add an aftermarket trigger guard like those from Magpul or Manticore Arms. This would take care of:

  • Trigger Guard
  • Trigger Guard Pins

What’s Left?

That would leave only the following parts for you to purchase separately:

  • Bolt Catch Spring
  • Buffer Retainer Spring
  • Magazine Catch Spring
  • Pivot Detent Spring
  • Selector Spring
  • Takedown Detent Spring
  • Bolt Catch Buffer
  • Bolt Catch Roll Pin
  • Pivot Detent
  • Pivot Pin
  • Takedown Detent
  • Takedown Pin
  • Bolt Catch
  • Buffer Retainer
  • Magazine Catch
  • Magazine Catch Button

Most of these are available from Colt individually through Brownells.com. Colt lower parts are widely regarded as the best made. If they are too rich for your blood or out of stock, substitute in another brand. I think you may have better luck finding individual parts than finding complete parts kits.

I wish I started my builds this way the first time around.
