Welcome Echo Nine Three

We are blessed to be in a position where we can be picky about who we partner with here on JTT. The companies that you see on the right side of your screen are all companies that we trust to take care of you with great products and great service. The newest company that we are privileged to partner with is Echo Nine Three.

ARS built AKM with Echo93 V3 Sling Plate and Dual Mode Sling

Echo Nine Three offers several products and services but they are most known for their sling plates. I have and use several of them and I feel that they are the best rear sling mounting points available for AK pattern rifles. There is no better solution.

In addition to the sling plates, Echo Nine Three offers the Dual Mode Sling, training, gunsmithing, and a really slick AR-15 lower receiver. Their lowers really fill a niche that is missing on the market. There are tons of lowers on the market with crazy graphics and gaudy logos but the Echo Nine Three M416 lower receiver is plainly marked. Not everyone wants a zombie pirate holding a chainsaw laser-etched on their lower.

We’re thrilled to introduce Echo Nine Three as our newest partner here on JTT. Check out Echo93.com and the Echo Nine Three Facebook Page.

Guest Post: Addax Tactical ORM Review by Greg Carlson

Please welcome back Greg Carlson of Carlson Comps for his second guest post on JTT.

Every once in a while, an AR-15 comes along that impresses me and separates itself from the pack. There are a ton of upgrade options available for the AR-15 so I usually look for a basic one to start with. That was certainly the case when I was introduced to the Addax Tactical ORM (Optics Ready Mid-length) DI AR 15. This review will serve as a quick, down and dirty observation through testing of that rifle.

Located in San Fernando California, Addax Tactical has been building quality AR 15 rifles for a few years now. Their primary objective continues to be attention to detail with their firearms, and I must say that this middy ORM certainly was everything I expected and more. They were originally known for their piston type AR platforms which were operated by a unique dwell-type gas system that was derived largely from the AK-47 action. Addax has now switched gears and has recently been solely focused on DI AR platforms in both 5.56 and 308.

When I contacted Chris, the owner of Addax Tactical, for the next addition to my AR family, I requested a simple and sturdy AR. I also wanted to include a couple of components that I have always wanted, but never got around to including on any of my AR’s. With Chris’s help, I was able to incorporate of some of these features – a billet lower, mid-length gas system, and flat dark earth color furniture. I requested these features with the intent of staying within what I consider to be a basic rifle.

Observations

When I first inspected my new ORM rifle, I quickly realized that it “just felt right.” There was an absence of play between the upper and the lower because the lower incorporates a tensioning screw. Along with excellent overall fit and finish, the weapon was also balanced perfectly. The rifle incorporates a 14.5” barrel to which I permanently installed a custom muzzle device of my own design to achieve a 16.5“ OAL. After I validated the quality of the rifle visually, I was now very anxious to shoot this rifle.

My high hopes were gratified the next day at the range during testing. The weapon is “light” at 6.5 pounds (dry) and it shouldered quickly and responded smartly. The perceived recoil was lighter than normal and I found the rifle to react and point easily. As I engaged multiple targets, I was able to manipulate the weapon through several courses of fire without issue. I also tested some additions to this rifle at the range – a Wilson Combat TR-TUU drop in unit and an YHM flip up front sight base. Both performed well.

Wrap Up

The Addax Tactical ORM AR15 functioned flawlessly. It shot well on the move and from various field positions. It endured some hot, dry, dusty conditions (as always, with any AR-15, I recommend keeping the action well lubed for optimum performance). I experienced no issues with function, and the action was smooth and consistent. Overall, the ORM digested over 1500 rounds of American Eagle .223 55 grain FMJ (lot SMQ12D044-200) ammo and it wanted more. This is a robust and well-built firearm and will most likely be my “go to gun”.

Properly Storing Your Firearm

Proper firearms storage is an important practice for all gun owners and should be given a lot of thought. The mindset behind owning the firearm, the occupants of your home, and any local (nanny state) laws should be guiding factors as you make necessary decisions. Careless storage can result in tragedy and theft, but being overcautious could also render a firearm inaccessible if it is needed in a hurry for protection. Determining your home’s gun storage plan is a very personal decision and no blanket solution exists for all circumstances.

Not everybody owns a gun with personal protection in mind and their firearms are used predominantly (and likely rarely) for hunting or other sporting purposes. Others may have home defense in mind, but have never achieved the necessary proficiency to implement an action plan if it became necessary during a crisis. My recommendation to people who fit into either of the above categories is to keep their guns under lock and key. In my opinion, liability risks from unsecured weapons trump other variables in these situations.

Well designed storage solutions like those from Armory Racks can maximize the readiness of your secured handguns.

My sincerest advice to those inclined is to own a firearm for protection and to obtain the skills necessary for proficiency under stress. In most cases this skill level can only be reached with professional instruction or police, military, etc. training. Once this is achieved I still recommend keeping all firearms in a safe except for the one(s) currently designated to be used in defense of home and property. These weapons should be under your direct control (by either thoughtful placement or worn on your person) in this role and not just left lying around where the worst could happen.

The only weapon immediately ready for defense is fully loaded and charged. Anything else is a joke or attempted compensation for lack of training or familiarity. Incidentally, one of the best plans for securing your primary defense handgun when it’s not going to be under your immediate control is in a small safe that’s readily accessible in the area of your home where you spend the most time. This about the only way the firearm can be safely stored while loaded. Other methods that require constant loading/unloading with the same ammunition should be avoided as this practice over time can cause dangerous over-pressure situations from bullet set back.

The interface between family members and guns is likely one of the most difficult equations to balance. Everyone wants to place full confidence in their kids, but misplaced trust can have the worst consequences imaginable. The individual maturity and friend/life choices that your child is making should be carefully weighed when firearm access decisions are made in the home.

Imagine how this man must feel after his grandson stole his pistol and used it to commit three murders! As if this wasn’t tragedy enough, predatory lawyers and their greedy clients are seeking to hold him civilly liable because of the manner in which he stored his firearm. We live in a disturbing time where once unthinkable acts of violence are commonplace and the character of many (especially young) people has greatly eroded. Proper securing and storage of firearms maybe one of the most important choices you ever make with your weapon.
