Classic American Bushcraft Knives from Ontario Knife Company – Coming Spring 2014

Ontario Knife Company is one of the remnants of a time when America made incredibly well crafted tools right here on our soil. I always pay attention when they bring out something new. They recently shared this photo of some bushcraft classics that they will be releasing in Spring 2014.

Ontario Knives Bushcraft

The knife has a classic bushcraft shape with a spear point blade, small guard, slightly flared pommel, and relatively straight overall form. It certainly looks like a capable knife for a variety of tasks.

The machete is what really has my interest. A well executed machete is likely the most versatile survival tool in existance and Ontario Knife Company knows how to make a machete having made them for the US Military and commercial markets for many years. Their upcoming bushcraft machete has several desirable features including a cutting edge that comes nearly all the way to the handle, a sensible “bush machete” blade profile, a hooked pommel to aid in retention while chopping, and wood slab handles.

Pocket D.A.R.K. Mini from Dark Angel Medical

What weighs less than 5 ounces, is slightly larger than a pack of cigarettes, and just might save your life? The answer is a Glock 26 or, for the purposes of this post, it’s the Pocket D.A.R.K. Mini from Dark Angel Medical.

Pocket DARK Mini

You may recall that Dark Angel Medical already makes a pocket trauma kit. However, this new “Mini” version is even smaller and lighter. It includes the following:

  1. SWAT-T Tourniquet – This can be used as a tourniquet or a pressure dressing. It is also extremely compact when rolled.
  2. Celox Rapid Ribbon – This is a narrow hemostatic gauze that is 1″ wide and 5′ long.
  3. Gloves – Obviously, it is preferable to not to catch cooties from some guy’s blood.
  4. 2′ of Duct Tape – This can be used a number of ways including turning the 3 mil thick plastic packaging into a occlusive chest dressing.

This is obviously a very minimalist kit and it certainly limits your options but this is also a kit that you might actually carry. It’s four simple contents are versatile and compact which is pretty much all you can ask from a compact trauma kit.

Crossbreed Holsters Purse Defender

I have never carried a purse but even I can recognize that most purses intended for concealed carry are ugly, somewhat obvious, and offer a painfully slow draw stroke due to poor access. I am not sure that the Crossbreed Holster Purse Defender solves all those issues but at least it turns a normal purse into one capable of safe concealed carry.

The Purse Defender consists of a rigid loop Velcro panel and a hook Velcro backed holster. The panel can be placed in the purse (or briefcase, attache, etc) and then the holster can be placed on the panel at a location and angle that suits the user’s draw stroke. The panel can also be used to mount additional accessories like the optional magazine carrier.

Bladder Koozies

My friends at Beez Combat Systems recently mentioned Bladder Koozies on their blog and I am glad they did because they are a great idea. If you use hydration bladders, you know that cold drinks don’t stay cold for long and I suppose you would have the same issues with hot drinks but I have never tried.

Bladder Koozie

The HydrationTubeCovers.com Bladder Koozies are pouches made from 4mm neoprene that serve to insulate and protect the Camelbak Antidote bladder. They have only two openings – one for the fill cap and one for the hydration tube. The bladder is folded and inserted through the fill cap hole in order to install it in the Koozie.

Check out the Bladder Koozies at HydrationTubeCovers.com.

I should also note that these will fit inside the Beez Combat Systems Hydration Carrier Short.
