TOPS Knives Brakimo – Now Available

Here is some free advice if you are shopping for a knife… If Joe Flowers designed it and TOPS Knives produced it, you can’t go wrong. Joe has had a hand in several great TOPS knives including the Shango series, the Machete .230, and the Lite Trekker. The Brakimo is now joining that list.

The Brakimo is a result of the collaboration between Bushcraft Global (Joe’s adventure/survival school) and TOPS Knives. This knife is designed to be the flagship knife for the school. It is meant to serve as a companion to a machete in the jungle or a good all around field knife where ever you find yourself. The Brakimo has already been vetted in the Amazon jungle on previous Bushcraft Global trips.

From TOPS Knives:

It has a fairly wide blade profile combined with TOPS’ modified Scandi grind that gives it great cutting and splitting power. The tip narrows dramatically to make it useful for drilling holes for bow-drill fires, blow gun mouth pieces, traps, etc. The simple design is perfect for many different uses. Made with 1095 high carbon steel, it’s easy to maintain the edge while out in the field. We found through testing on the 2015 Bushcraft Global trip that by keeping it dry whenever possible, rust was not an issue.

The word Brakimo comes from the Matis language (which is unwritten as far as we are aware). The Matis is a tribe found in Brazil that was uncontacted by the modern world until 1975-1976. The tribe has a unique way of life that would challenge the survival skills of any survival expert. If you’re lucky enough to participate in a Bushcraft Global adventure, odds are that you’ll get to meet one of these extraordinary people and learn a few of the skills they use to survive daily life in the jungle.

See the specs below for more details. Check out the Brakimo at TOPS Knives.

Flat Grind Mora Knives from Baryonyx Knife Co.

Everyone likes Mora knives because they are such a great value but not everyone likes maintaining their “Scandi” grind edges. Baryonyx Knife Co. is now offering Moras that have been reground with full flat grinds. The knives are still very affordable but now they have increased cutting performance and a grind with which more Americans are familiar.

I should also mention that Baryonyx Knife Co. is one of my favorite places to buy cutting tools. They inspect each and every item that they carry before selling it to ensure that everything is as it should be. They also offer a very affordable “Special Grade” service on most items which means that they will regrind the cutting edge to improves its performance. These services are especially nice for items like machetes which often come unsharpened or axes where you have to be concerned with things like grain orientation.

New from TOPS Knives: C.U.T. 4.0

The new TOPS CUT 4.0 looks like it might be one of the few knives that can successfully bridge the gap between a reasonable effective karambit and a practical, general-purpose knife. That is exactly what designer Joshua Swanagon was hoping to accomplish.

CUT4 (1)

Having a martial arts background, Joshua Swanagon has done some training with the karambit and is a fan of ring style knives and their prowess in combative applications. However, also being an avid outdoorsman, he has found them to be less than ideal as field utility blades. So he set out to make a knife that could combine those disciplines and decided to call it the C.U.T. 4.0 (Combat Utility Tool).

Those of you who keep an eye on TOPS Knives will notice that the sheath is a departure from their usual kydex-with-a-clip designs. This kydex sheath features two soft loops that allow the sheath to be mounted a number of ways including horizontally on the belt with the handle in toward the centerline. This carry method makes it easy to draw the knife wit either hand in a very compact space.

Even if you never use the karambit functionality of this knife, you’ll appreciate the versatile blade shape and practical size. Check out the new CUT 4.0 at TOPS Knives.

CRKT Forged By War Program

CRKT has started the Forged By War series of knives based on the work of Ryan Johnson, founder of RMJ Tactical. The series will consist of knives and tools designed by veterans and 10% of all sales of these knives will be donated to the veteran charity that the designer chooses.

The first three tools in this series were introduced at the 2016 SHOT Show and CRKT just released a series of videos that document the knives, the men behind them, and share more about the Forged By War program.
