Knife Coatings, Science, and Gough Custom

I appreciate when a maker is willing to put their various products, components, and processes to the test in a bid for constant improvement and I especially like it when they share the results of the testing as a way to educate the consumer. Gough Custom has done things like this before with their cold weather kydex testing. Their latest test pits 6 different knife coatings against one another in trials that simulate real world knife use.

The test below is simple in method but fairly exhaustive in scope. It tests the abrasion and corrosion resistance of the various treatments including the coating that Gough Custom currently uses on their knives. Their current coating was clearly outperformed and, as a result, will be replaced.

There are some clear take-aways from this video:

  1. I really appreciate when a craftsman honors his craft and customers with methodical testing to make their own products better.
  2. DLC treatments perform impressively well as knife coatings.
  3. We are all smarter now.

GunfightersINC Micro Aggression Thigh Panel

GunfightersINC’s new Micro Aggression Thigh Panel is now available. This panel is designed to be used with their MOLLE compatible holsters (those with MALICE clips attached) to create a drop holster. In addition to it’s intended use as a drop holster, it can also be used as a compact sub-load with MOLLE compatible pouches.

Micro Aggression Panel

Details from GunfightersINC:

2 rows of custom spec webbing allows virtually any MOLLE or PALs compatible items to be attached, in addition to any of our holsters with Malice clips attached. Wider spacing between bartacks allows easier attachment of our Kydex holsters. Total panel size is 4” tall by 6 ¾” wide.

The stiffened 1″ dual belt loops are attached with a Velcro closure, allowing the Micro Aggression panel to be attached to just about anything, including MOLLE/PALs battlebelts, standard belts, backpack hip belts or whatever else you’d like to get off your hip. Speaking of straps, the thigh strap is 1.5″ gripper webbing with an elastic stretch panel. Once you have your strap dialed, you can rotate it into the tunnel on the rig keeping it out of the way. Since the strap is “floating” and stretches, it greatly eliminates issues rubbing and chafing issues.

Unlike many traditional drop rigs, the Micro Aggression panel sits much higher on the thigh to prevent traditional issues with drop rigs, such as floppy holster syndrome. It’s also much smaller, because it’s really silly to have a massive panel attached to your leg simply to attach a relatively small single pistol holster. Additionally, to prevent floppy holster syndrome, the panel is stiffened with a dense foam and backed with a no slip hypalon panel.

The Micro Aggression Thigh Panel is available from GunfightersINC in Black, Multicam, Wolf Gray, and Coyote.

UW Gear Introduces Rigs for 33 Round Glock Magazines

UW Gear has introduced their new pouch design for Glock 33 round “Happy Sticks”. The pouch may also fit other similarly sized stick magazines but it has been specifically built and tested for 33 round Glock magazines. A rig like this make more sense now than ever with the proliferation of RDS equipped handguns and the use of compact pistol caliber carbines/pistols as PDWs.

The video below shows the new pouch being utilized on the UW Gear Bandoleer but it can also be utilized on their chest rig designs. Like all UW Gear magazine pouches, it makes use of their exclusive tuck tab flap closure and integral drainage hole.

These rigs are currently being treated as a special order item. You can contact UW Gear to work out the details of your order.

CORE Nano Adventure Wallet as Compact Entry Kit

This is pretty slick. Vigilant Gear posted a picture of how they use the CORE Nano Adventure Wallet from Triple 7 Gear/20$ Bandit as a compact entry kit organizer. Many people who live or work in urban spaces are adding lock bypass tools to their emergency preparedness kits and this looks like handy way to keep those tools organized.

To put this in perspective, the kit shown is smaller than a deck of playing cards yet it can bypass most common types of locks the urban survivor is likely to encounter. This kit is not being offered for sale as shown but you can build your own that is tailored to your needs/skill level. Most of the individual tools are available at Vigilant Gear.
