OSOE BBD Bag

OSOE’s latest bag, the BBD Bag, is now available. This compact, full clamshell opening, bag has a ton of versatility built in.

bbd_bag_1_grande

The BBD Bag is flexible enough to serve as anything from a compact EDC bag to something like an active shooter response bag. Its outer surfaces are covered with OSOE’s color matched PALS webbing (8 columns x 3 rows). The opposing interior surfaces are covered with loop material to accept any hook backed organization pouches.

Picture 8 AR-15 magazines arranged in 4 stacks of 2 magazines each side by side and you have rough idea of the size of the bag but it can be stuffed beyond this 8″ x 12″ x 3.5″ size. It is large enough to carry a fair amount of gear but not so large that you’ll overload it. If you need to expand it’s capacity, you can add pouches to the exterior PALS field.

The BBD Bag features a double-zippered clamshell opening design that gives full access to all contents. It can be carried via a large grab handle or the included removable shoulder strap that utilizes G-Hooks to attach to the bag.

Review: OSOE Compact Tear Off Med Pouch

Everyone knows why they should carry a stocked IFAK in your range gear and yet, I rarely see med pouches mounted on the kitted out Tactical Tuxedos that I see at the range. There are many reasons people don’t carry them but chief among those reason are bulk and cost. The OSOE Compact Tear-Off Med Pouch can help mitigate both.

Overview

The OSOE Compact Tear-Off Med Pouch is just what it sounds like. It is a pouch that is designed to carry a trauma kit in an extremely compact form. The main body of the pouch has a unique, origami like, folding tray design that features various elastic straps and pockets to organize your life saving supplies. It can be mounted vertically or horizontally depending on which mount you choose. Like most OSOE gear, it is made from 1000D nylon and extremely overbuilt.

Observations from Use

The greatest strength of the OSOE Compact Tear-Off Med Pouch is in its folding design which makes the pouch extremely compact, protects the contents very well, and lays everything out where it can be easily accessed when open. OSOE thoughtfully provided plenty of Velcro surface area on the pouch to hold it closed when folded. This allows you to really bear down on it and actually compress the pouch on itself when folding it which is the secret to its compact size. When it is open, it can be laid down on the ground or any reasonably flat surface with all of its contents spread out and accessible. It is a tremendous design.

OSOE makes both vertical and horizontal mounts for the OSOE Compact Tear-Off Med Pouch. I find that the vertical mount is well suited to chest rig, plate carrier, and belt mounting. The horizontal mount works very well for use on a belt if you have the additional width required. The mounts are available to be purchased separately so you can purchase one pouch, fill it, and then pre-stage mounts on all your various gear. That way you can just move the same med pouch and its expensive contents to which ever gear you are using. That beats the heck out of having to purchase multiple med kits so you can have 1 on your belt, chest rig, plate carrier, etc.

The interior of the pouch is very well organized. There is more than enough room for a basic kit. The central elastic loops are large enough to handle anything from a fairly compact 4” Israeli Bandage to larger bandages like those from H&H. If you are using a 4” bandage in the center, there is room to tuck some extra guaze beneath the bandage. The pocket on the right side of the pouch can hold your hemostatic agent as well as a folded chest dressing. There are various elastic loops on the left side for organizing narrower items like an airway and decompression needle. You will be surprised how much you can jam into this pouch and then compress.

The exterior of the pouch has a vertical column of PALS webbing on each side which can be used to mount a tourniquet though I think that somewhat defeats the purpose of a compact pouch and choose to mount my TQ elsewhere. OSOE makes a full line of TQ holders that can serve this purpose well.

The mounts hold the OSOE Compact Tear-Off Med Pouch very securely. The pouch is secured in place with Velcro and then compressed and retained further with a strap and side release buckle. To access the pouch, you simple pinch the buckle and pull the pouch free from its mount. It is quick and easy to access in a self-aid situation or to hand it off to someone if the need arises.

I have also found that the pouch makes a great med kit for used without the mount in the various loop Velcro lined backpacks and messenger bags on the market. You simply stick the pouch where ever you need it and its red pull tab makes it immediately apparent, even in a dark bag, that it contains first aid items.

The OSOE Compact Tear-Off Med Pouch’s compact size makes it easy to carry and its ability to be moved easily from gear to gear make it easy on your wallet. The folding design is inspired. This is a great med pouch.

Review: OSOE Deployable TQ Pouch and TK-4 Self Deploy Pouch

Original Special Operations Equipment (OSOE) has one of the most extensive lines of medic pouches on the market. In this review, I’ll be taking a look at 2 of their tourniquet (TQ) pouches – the Deployable TQ Pouch and the TK-4 Self Deploy Pouch.

Overview

Both pouches, like all OSOE gear, made from 1000D Cordura Nylon. They feature red webbing that visually indicates them as pouches that are carrying medical components and to visually indicate where to pull on the pouch to access the contents. Both pouches are designed to fully cover the TQ while also allowing it to be deployed quickly. These pouches are designed to mount via MALICE clips or similar.

The Deployable TQ Pouch is a vertical pouch that is suitable for carrying full size TQs like the CAT and SOF-T. It takes up only a single vertical column of PALS webbing and can be mounted on as few as 2 rows or as many as 3 rows of PALS webbing. It closed via hook and loop along its entire height and reinforced with a snap. You simply pull the webbing tab to deploy the TQ.

The TK-4 Self Deploy Pouch also mounts vertically to a single column of PALS webbing. It needs only 2 rows of webbing to mount. It is closed via a hook and loop secured flap with a webbing tab. When the tab is pulled, it lifts the flap and raises the TK-4 tourniquet out of the pouch. It is a clever design.

Observations from Use

Both pouches performed well which is to say that they held their cargo without drama. You can’t ask much of a TQ pouch other than it holds the TQ securely and allows quick access which both pouches did.

I like the slim profile of the Deployable TQ Pouch. It is the kind of pouch that you can always find room for on your gear. I use it on my belt or mounted high on the front of a plate carrier. One the belt, it is slim enough to fit between other gear, out of the way but accessible. On the plate carrier, it is slim enough to ride next an admin pouch or unobtrusively up on the high, front of the plate where it can be reached easily with either hand.

The TK-4 Self Deploy Pouch is a versatile and compact pouch which is fitting because the TK-4 itself is very compact. The TK-4 is not as fool proof as a full size TQ, but I own a ton of them because they are effective with some training, very affordable, and extremely compact. This pouch is a great compliment to the TK-4.

The TK-4 Self Deploy Pouch’s compact footprint makes it right at home in the same places as the Deployable TQ Pouch but also offers some additional functionality like the ability to be strung onto a sling. I like to keep mine on the static portion of my Blue Force Gear VCAS sling so that I always have a TQ on my rifle. This is a very handy pouch.

These OSOE TQ pouches secure and protect the tourniquet well and still allow fast, easy access. They are compact enough to be mounted in a number of different ways. Like all OSOE gear, they are overbuilt and should serve you well for a lifetime. Check out the OSOE line of medical pouches.

AGS/Henry Holster Lo-Profile Chest Rig, PMAG-Gen. 2

It’s finally here! I have been keeping an eye on this one for a long time now. The recently mentioned AGS/Henry Holster Lo-Profile Chest Rig, PMAG-Gen. 2 is now available and I can share some additional details.

phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpg

This chest rig is a true collaboration. The Boltoron (thermoplastic like Kydex) body of the chest rig is made by Henry Holsters. The straps are manufactured by OSOE and the rig is assembled and distributed exclusively by AGS Armament & Consulting.

The chest rig is relatively unique in that is made from thermoplastic and inverted (magazines hang below the rig). These features serve a purpose as this chest rig is designed to function as a low-profile or concealment chest rig. The thermoplastic construction keeps it very thin and the inverted design allows the wearer to reach under the covering garment to access magazines.

The tension on each of the two magazine carriers is adjustable. All the hardware on the body of the chest rig is stainless steel.

The AGS/Henry Holster Lo-Profile Chest Rig, PMAG-Gen. 2 is available only at AGS Armament & Consulting.
