MerkWares Pocket Super Shelter Updates

We first mentioned the MerkWares Pocket Super Shelter almost 2 months ago. The shelter has now moved past the crowdfunding stage and is making strides toward entering production. In fact, MerkWares just released a video update that shows a sample Pocket Super Shelter will become the production version.

The improvements include new tie downs, an improved snap system to replace the hook and loop closure, and an easier to set up ridge line configuration. The video above shows the changes in detail. Stay tuned for pricing and availability information.

Crowdfunding – MerkWares LLC Pocket Super Shelter

If you are at least mildly familiar with the term “bushcraft”, you are likely also familiar with Mors Kochanski – one of the great figures in the bushcraft world. He developed the Super Shelter concept which was a compact shelter that could be built in the woods with tools and know-how for surviving cold weather. What if a similar shelter could be built with no tools and very little know-how?

Merkwares LLC, makers of the excellent Emberlit Stove, have developed a new shelter called the Pocket Super Shelter. It is designed, when coupled with a small fire in front of the shelter, to actively heat the occupant. It accomplishes this feat with a clear plastic front (towards the fire) and a reflective liner. The clear plastic front acts like glass in a greenhouse while the reflective material, which is more durable than mylar, reflects the heat of the fire onto the occupant.

The shelter comes vacuum packed into a very compact package and can be compressed effectively after it’s first use for continued use. The material used in construction, Heatsheets proprietary Silver Lining™ Technology, is more durable than the typical mylar space blanket or tube shelter.. It sets up with 4 stakes and a single ridge line tied to anchor points.

Merkwater Casting Handlines

Handline fishing has been around forever and the rigs that people use to do it mostly all have one thing in common… They are much easier to pack than a fishing rod! The new Markwater Casting Handlines are barely larger than your outstretched hand making them a lightweight and compact way to add fishing gear to your backpacking or survival kit.

The Merkwater Casting Handlines are from the same people behind the excellent Emberlit stoves. They are made from Baltic Birch plywood and then stained, sealed, and have a handle wrap applied by hand. 40 feet of 10 pound test line is supplied.

Crowdfund This: MerkWares Sprongs

MerkWares, creator of the Emberlit Camp Stove, is attempting to crowd fund their latest creation – Sprongs. Sprongs are a fork and spoon that can be clipped together to create a pair of camp tongs for camp cooking or to nest inside each other for storage. The same mechanism that allows them to clip together can also be used as a hook for lifting hot pots or lids. It is a very simple and ingenious tool much like the Emberlit.

The current crowd funding effort is to fund the creation of a plastic version. Eventually, MerkWares would like to introduce stainless steel and titanium versions of Sprongs so consider this a sort of first step in that direction.

I can see these being seriously handy who spends more than a few hours in the field. Check out Sprongs on Kickstarter.
