New and Improved 30SD 7.62mm Suppressor from Griffin Armament

Griffin Armament just announced the new and improved version of their 30SD 7.62mm QD Suppressor.

The 30SD’s tube chassis is machined from 17-4 stainless steel bar stock. The blast chamber and front mount support at integral. The tube has patent pending fluted which increases surface area for cooling and adds rigidity for durability at a lower weight penalty. The front cap has been redesigned to suppress flash.

On the interior, the 30SD features a patent pending, high efficiency baffle system that has improved performance across all calibers. According to Griffin Armament: “The 30SD (Mod 2) retained its excellent 7.62mm sound reduction, but dropped ~4DB’s in 300BLK, and 5DB’s on 5.56mm firearms. The 30SD offers a 5.56mm 132DB sound reduction.”

Griffin Armament 30SD Mount

Griffin Armament’s SD-QD mounting system allows the 30SD to be mounted on A2 flash suppressors as well as their own full line of M4SD muzzle devices. The SD-QD mount uses a unique locking gate rather than metal on metal ratcheting action. This makes mounting the 30SD very quick and prevents metal on metal wear. The tolerances on the 30SD and M4SD mounts are tightly controlled to allow for minimal and repeatable zero shift.  A 30SD Muzzle Brake mount is included with every 30SD Suppressor.

Griffin Armament XM Linear Comp

The original moderator found on the venerable XM177E2 falls under the NFA because it reduces sound ever so slightly. This has lead to several manufacturers making reproductions that lack the internal baffles. Unfortunately, these repro devices are little more than a steel sleeve made to achieve a specific look with little to no actual functionality. Griffin Armament’s XM Linear Comp is different.

The XM Linear Comp actually functions like a proper linear comp. It redirects sound down range, away from the shooter and reduces muzzle rise. All of the changes that make this functionality possible are internal so the aesthetics of the device are unaffected. It is actually machined to the original Colt print to ensure it looks as close as possible to the original part.

Griffin Armament machines these from 17-4PH stainless steel and gives them a QPQ finish. The XM Linear Comp is thoroughly modern in functionality and materials yet historically accurate in terms of appearance and dimensions. How cool is that? I suddenly find myself scouring internet forums for XM177E2 parts…

Griffin Armament AK Flash Comp 14x1mm LH

Griffin Armament has brought their Flash Comp to the AK. The M4SD Flash Comp continues to be one of my favorite AR-15 muzzle devices so it is nice to see it adapted to work with the 14x1mm LH threads found commonly on AKs.

The AK Flash Comp 14x1mm LH is made from 17-4PH steel with a black oxide finish. It is long enough to bring a 14.5″ barrel to a legal 16″ of length and is pre-drilled for pinning. Like the AR version, Griffin Armament claims that this provides neutral muzzle control and solid flash suppression.

It can also be used with Griffin Armament’s new QD Blast Shield but should not be used with their suppressors.

Griffin Armament M4SD Linear Comp 5.56mm

Griffin Armament just rolled out their new M4SD Linear Comp. It is unique in that it is the first linear compensator designed to serve as a suppressor mount. It also has small ports at the time to help with muzzle rise (most linear comps have no vertical or lateral ports).

This represents what could be an interesting functional combination. The user would have sound suppression when the suppressor was installed and even when the suppressor is not installed, the concussion would be directed down range.

Griffin Armament Fail Safe Sights

The new Fail Safe Sights from Griffin Armament will be formally introduced at SHOT Show 2014 but you can consider this a sneak preview. They should be available shortly after the show.

Griffin Armament Fail Safe Sights Set

The Fail Safe Sights are offset iron sights that are designed to be used in conjunction with an optic on your carbine. They attach to the 12 o’clock rail like typical iron sights but place the sights offset to the rail so that the shooter can rotate the rifle slightly in order to use the sights without removing the optic. These sights are designed so that they are offset on the axis of the bore which means that they are still directly over the bore and can be zeroed as usual.

Griffin Armament Fail Safe Sights with RDS

Griffin Armament built some pretty unique functionality into the Fail Safe Sights. The front sight is in the HK style with a full circle shroud. It is not adjustable for elevation which is a good thing with this style of shroud. The biggest strength of HK style front sights (and they reason they don’t always adapt well to the AR-15’s elevation adjustable front sight) is that the shooter will tend to center the round shroud in the rear sight aperture rather than the front sight post when they are using a faster sight picture. This technique can be very fast which makes sense for a sight set that is intended to offer a faster sighting alternative to an magnified optic. If the front sight was adjustable for elevation like on most HK style sights for the AR-15, there would be a slight difference in the point of impact when centering the front sight versus centering the entire shroud which is not desirable.

The rear sight is both windage and elevation adjustable which makes zeroing easier and makes the fixed front sight work. It features multiple sized rear sight apertures.
