UW Gear Mini Swampfox Chest Rig

UW Gear has released a new version of the Swampfox chest rig. The Mini Swampfox will only be available for AR-15 magazines. It carries the same four magazines that the regular Swampfox carries but it has two double magazine pouches instead of four single magazine pouches. The result is a split front chest rig that is very compact.

In addition to the magazines pouches, the Mini Swampfox features a 2 x 3 PALS grid to the outside of each magazine pouch so the user can add compact IFAK pouches, GP pouches, or additional magazine pouches. It has the same great H harness that is found on all of UW Gear’s rigs.

Speaking of the harness… UW Gear is also now offering horizontal PALS webbing as an option on their harnesses. This can be ordered on any of their chest rigs. The standard harness has vertical webbing which is useful for rigging small backpacks or hydration carriers to the chest rig. The new horizontal option will allow users to attach small pouches or radios more easily.

The Mini Swampfox is not listed on the UW Gear site. It is being offered on a trial basis for now. To order, simply place an order for a regular Swampfox and mention in the order notes that you want the Mini version or send an email references your order. The horizontal PALS webbing option on the harness can be ordered the same way.

Flagrant Beard, LLC

Flagrant Beard, LLC is a brand spankin’ new company that offers t-shirts, really nice belts, and socks. I can already hear you asking why you should care. You should care because they make a t-shirt that equates leaving your AR-15 dust cover open to leaving your fly open and that is funny stuff.

You should also care because they take pictures like this so you know they like to have some fun.

Finally, you should care because they write really excellent press releases…

Flagrant Beard, LLC Launches New Apparel Line

Flagrant Beard, LLC, perhaps the only adventure, hard-use apparel company headquartered in a barn, is proud to announce the launch of their new line of products.  The first wave of ginger-spawned goodness includes belts, printed tees and socks – soft goods intended for people who are anything but soft.

Flagrant Beard products are meant to be outdoors, on the edge and at risk.  Though they will likely fit timid people with cold souls they will never suit them.  This company has been, since its very inception, dedicated to the principle that you should wring every drop of joy from life; to the men and women who step into the arena, who know what it is to court failure by daring greatly; to those who would rather sweat and bleed and strive than sit comfortably at home protected by the toil and vigilance of others.

Flagrant Beard was never meant for those who are content to rest, to play it safe or to stand quietly by while great things are done elsewhere….in short, Flagrant Beard is about doing what needs to be done.  It’s living life, “Balls out.”

Though our initial offering was a very well received shirt emblazoned with that very phrase, the most popular in our lineup thus far has been our belts.  Handsome enough for church or formal dinner but rugged enough for a fight, they’re hand-made by Amish artisans near Nashville to exacting standards.  The belts come in 2 styles, FB DuraBelt and FB Articulated Leather.  Articulated Leather versions are available in black, burgundy or tan (sorry, no MultiCam or Gucciflage, and there’s no MOLLE or Velcro either).  They’re 3/16 in. thick so they won’t “taco” under a gun or magazines and offer contrast stitching.

The DuraBelts look and feel like leather but are actually a polyester webbing with a TPU coating that makes them more durable, waterproof and easy to clean.  They offer 2 ½ tons of tensile strength; enough to STABO some guys, though so far we haven’t actually tried it.  DuraBelts are anti-microbial and offer extreme resistance to abrasion and moisture.  Both belt styles feature threaded rivets to allow for interchangeable buckles, both are 1.5 in. wide and both are sturdy enough to beat someone to death but remain sufficiently comfortable for all-day wear.

Oh, and they’ll hold up your pants.  Sizes available include Small through XXL. Find the one most suitable for you with our sizing chart, or read more on our belt page.

Flagrant Beard offers gear for women too, of course, particularly those who’d rather be training for a gunfight than baking cakes.  Take a look at the Annie shirt if you’re a lady who likes the smell of cordite or engine oil.  After all, caliber knows no gender.  You can find the complete line of women’s shirts online here.

Wilson Combat Elite Tactical 1911 Magazine, 9mm

Magazine selection is always important. It is especially important with 1911s and doubly so with 9mm 1911s which are notoriously finicky about magazines. Choosing a 9mm 1911 magazine may have just become a bit easier. Wilson Combat’s new Next-Gen Elite Tactical 1911 Magazine for 9mm chambered 1911s are now available.

These new magazines are impressive and have several features that go a long way toward mitigating some of the common issues with 9mm 1911s. That includes an integral feedramp that should help feed a wider range of bullet shapes and extra power springs to help ensure lock back and that the top round is in place in time to be stripped by the slide.

The 10 round version is currently available but compact versions should be available soon. Check out the new 9mm Elite Tactical 1911 Magazines at Wilson Combat.

Review: Dara Holsters & Gear OWB Holster

I have spent the last several months with one of Dara Holsters’ OWB Holsters for the Glock 19 with Streamlight TLR-1.  I’ve put it through its paces, taken notes, and now its time to dig in.

Dara Holsters G19 with Light

Overview

The Custom Kydex OWB Holster from Dara Holsters is a molded Kydex holster that is well suited for range work. It is clearly not designed to be a concealment holster.

Dara Holsters uses .093″ Kydex. This holster features finely adjustable tension via three adjustment screws. Their belt mount and tension adjustment hardware is Melonite treated.

All of their holsters come with what they call a “No BS, Lifetime Warranty”.

Observations from Use

The holster exhibits good fit and finish with a very positive click-in/click-out and no drag or additional catch points. This is due to the care that has been taken to block various catch points on the gun and light during the molding process. This takes some attention to detail to get right and Dara Holsters got it right. The edges are well finished to a satin polish.

Dara Holsters OWB Edges

Dara Holsters offers several different belt attachments for these holsters. I was able to try the winged belt loops (double loop), the single belt loop (single loop), and the paddle. The winged belt loops are very wide and stable and offer quite a bit of adjustment for height and cant. The single belt loop is surprisingly stable but not nearly as stable as the winged belt loops. It offers no adjustment for ride height or cant and is probably my least favorite of the attachments. The paddle is one of the best paddles that I have used. It holds the belt tenaciously and is quite stable in spite of its fairly small foot print.

I mentioned earlier, that this is not a concealment holster and that is due in large part to how the belt attachments are fixed to the back of the holster. The handgun is held out slightly from the body, not right up against it. It was not designed to be an OWB concealment holster and as it is, it makes a very good range holster. I have also found it to be very comfortable for around the homestead when I don’t need to conceal.

Dara Holsters offers a staggering amount of options on their holsters. Like most custom makers, you can choose the belt attachment, color, and light/laser but they go so far as to offer options like ride height, muzzle coverage, and flared openings! I am not sure I have seen so many options at the point of purchase. None of the options increase the price.

Dara Holsters OWB Back

I will admit to having a preference for holsters without adjustable retention so I am not crazy about the triple tension adjustment screws. It just seems that tension screws are always working themselves loose, even when they have thread locking compound applied though the ones on this holster have not loosened. I tested the holster with one and even two of the screws removed just to see what would happen if screws were lost. Surprisingly, the holster will function reasonably well with just one of the tension screws in the top or middle position so at least there is some redundancy built in if you lose a screw.

I did get to experience their customer service. My initial holster came with a crushed sight channel that caused my front sights to drag on the inside of the holster and gouge the Kydex. After I wore in the initial groove, the problem started to go away but I still contacted Dara Holsters. They sent a replacement along with a return label for the original. The replacement was in hand in about 4 days.

Wrap Up

I did have initial issues with my first holster which were corrected quickly. The replacement holster has been a solid performer that exhibits good quality. The Melonite treated hardware is VERY nice touch. You will be blown away by the amount of custom options offered on these holsters. The winged double belt loop is great and the paddle is one of the best I have used. I would pass on the single belt loop as it lacks the stability and adjustability of the double.

I have come to really like this holster for situations where concealment is not an issue which are frequent since I live on rural property.
