ESEE Pack Kit – A Knife Based Survival Pouch

Adding a pouch to a knife sheath is nothing new. Leave it to the survival savvy minds at ESEE Knives to add a knife sheath to a pouch! The ESEE Pack Kit is basically a small, well thought out organizer bag that allows you to carry essential survival gear. The unique feature is that the sheaths that come with ESEE Knives can be integrated into the pouch.

The ESEE Pack Kit is the second generation of this concept. This new version incorporates several improvements that were suggested by ESEE Knife users and still manages to cost less than the original. It will come in two sizes and multiple colors. It can be carried via a shoulder strap, on your belt, or by attaching it to your MOLLE/PALs gear.

This looks like just the thing for a minimalist survival kit.

Cheap Ruger 10-22 Magazine Pouch

You would think that, as popular as the Ruger 10-22 is, there would be tons of pouches available for the standard 10 round magazines. Sadly, this is not the case. There are not many pouches out there designed to hold the 10 round flush fit magazines that I love so much. There are few things that I like more than going on a woods walk with my 10-22 but until recently, I had no decent way to carry my spare magazines.

While searching online for a solution, I remembered reading somewhere about someone using speed loader pouches to carry their 10-22 mags and it dawned on me that I had an Uncle Mike’s speed loader pouch laying around in a junk box somewhere. A quick scouring of my junk boxes turned up an Uncle Mike’s Universal Speedloader Case. I dropped in a magazine and checked the fit. It looked promising.

I have been using the pouch for several months. I am happy to report that it not only works, but it is like the pouch was made for carrying 10-22 magazines! It isn’t just a simple pouch. There are actually two heavy duty webbing loops sewn into the pouch that provide a nice tight fit around the body of the magazine. They will not shift once they are pressed in place. The Velcro flaps do a good job keeping the magazines in the pouch, even when you slide down a hill on your backside unexpectedly. Ask me how I know. The pouch has proven to be very durable, though it isn’t really a hard use item.

I have found that reloads are fastest if you orient the magazines a specific way. Orient the magazine in the pouch so that the cartridges are toward your body with the bullet tips pointed to the ground (as shown in the above picture). The shooter simply lifts the flap, presses the magazine up out of the pouch by pressing their index finger on the bottom of the pouch, and grasps the magazine body on either side using the thumb and middle finger to remove it the rest of the way. This looks like one fluid motion with practice and you will find that the magazine is already oriented perfectly for insertion into the magazine well.

The best part is that I found this in a gun store’s used holster box for $1 years ago. Even if you have to buy one new, they are quite inexpensive.

Batuca Battery Cases

I have been using these Batuca battery cases for about 2 years now and they are the best that I have used. They can be used to hold and organize AA and CR123 sized batteries. It splits into two sections and each section is a contrasting color. There are several different colors available. The lid snaps shut securely and opens easily by lifting a small locking tab. They are even made in the USA.

The split sections allow you to tailor the amount of batteries that you need to carry. They can also help you organize your batteries. If you use rechargeable batteries you can keep fresh on one side and spent ones on the other side. There is a ton of organization potential.

These make a great addition to your hiking/camping gear or your EDC gear.

New Rotation Limited Quick Detach Mount-N-Slot Accessory

One of the marks of a great company is how they respond to customers. You spoke and Impact Weapon Components listened! The rotation limited version of their excellent Quick Detach Mount-N-Slot sling mount is now available. It is made from the great materials as the original with the addition of rotation limiters which prevent your sling from twisting.

I have one of these mounts in hand (along with a couple of other mounts) for review. They are impressive in concept, design, and execution. The whole concept just makes so much sense! They cut out cost, weight, bulk, and complexity which means you save money and have less that can go wrong on your rifle. What’s not to like?

Stay tuned for the more complete review!

Mountain Ridge Gear

I came across Mountain Ridge Gear recently. They make some extremely interesting gear right here in the USA. The quality looks great and the prices are very reasonable.

The Tactical Man Purse looks especially interesting. There is some serious functionality built into these bags. I especially like the mesh interior pockets and the “pull-out” pocket (ala Kifaru). The exterior looks somewhat low profile even though there is some PALS webbing on on one side.

Eric at Mountain Ridge Gear has graciously agreed to loan me a Tactical Man Purse for review. Stay tuned for the upcoming review.
