Pocket D.A.R.K. Mini from Dark Angel Medical

What weighs less than 5 ounces, is slightly larger than a pack of cigarettes, and just might save your life? The answer is a Glock 26 or, for the purposes of this post, it’s the Pocket D.A.R.K. Mini from Dark Angel Medical.

Pocket DARK Mini

You may recall that Dark Angel Medical already makes a pocket trauma kit. However, this new “Mini” version is even smaller and lighter. It includes the following:

  1. SWAT-T Tourniquet – This can be used as a tourniquet or a pressure dressing. It is also extremely compact when rolled.
  2. Celox Rapid Ribbon – This is a narrow hemostatic gauze that is 1″ wide and 5′ long.
  3. Gloves – Obviously, it is preferable to not to catch cooties from some guy’s blood.
  4. 2′ of Duct Tape – This can be used a number of ways including turning the 3 mil thick plastic packaging into a occlusive chest dressing.

This is obviously a very minimalist kit and it certainly limits your options but this is also a kit that you might actually carry. It’s four simple contents are versatile and compact which is pretty much all you can ask from a compact trauma kit.

Three Circle Knives Satori Tanto

The Satori Tanto from Three Circle Knives harkens back to the traditional Japanese tanto but brings some decidedly modern innovation to the age old design. The Satori Tanto is ground from 440C stainless steel and features a 6.5″ long American tanto shaped blade. The handle is wrapped with paracord in various colors. Each knife is Cerakoted in either satin silver, FDE, or black and comes with a Kydex sheath.

The cord for the handle wrap is retained by the Satori Tanto’s single guard and flared pommel. Both the guard and pommel are actually an integral part of the knife which is machined from a solid billet of steel. Integral designs are not necessarily new but I have never seen them used quite like this to retain a cord wrap.

The Satori Tanto is certainly a handsome knife with its long, graceful curve at the spine combined with the angular American tanto style edge and a design that manages to appear both traditional and modern at the same time. Check out the Satori Tanto at Three Circle Knives.

CRKS Kangaroo Mouse KM 1 Neck Knife

The world can never have enough skeletonized, carbon steel neck knives. That combination of toughness, ease of sharpening, ease of carry, and affordability makes these knives very versatile. The latest such knife is the Kangaroo Mouse KM 1 Neck Knife from Chestnut Ridge Knife Shop.

KM1 OD MED

The KM1 is made by Ontario Knife Co. for CRKS. It is made from 1/8″ thick 1095 steel and features a 3 1/4″ long blade with a 7″ overall length. Its drop point blade features a short saber grind with a long swedge grind. The KM1 comes with a kydex sheath in your choice of colors and various attachment systems.

Freeman Outdoor Gear

Whether you realize it or not, you already know at least a little something about Freeman Outdoor Gear (FOG) and their knife making pedigree. Jeff Freeman, the owner, is the designer of some of the most recognizable designs to come out of a certain “Legendary” knife manufacturer based in Oregon. He has now started his own brand and, judging by the initial offerings, that is good news for all of us.

The first design from FOG, the 451, is a looker. It seems to successfully straddle the lines between the outdoors/hunting knife genre and the tactical/survival genre. It is available in 2 sizes – the regular 451 with a 4″ blade and a compact version with 3.25″ blade. FOG grinds both knives from CPMS35VN which is an impressive steel that I find to be somewhat like a tougher, easier to sharpen version of S30V. The knives feature machined G-10 handle slabs and come with functional kydex sheaths.

You can create your own sharp looking color combination when you order a 451. The G-10 slabs are available in a number of colors and the blade is Cerakoted in your choice of colors.

These knives are not inexpensive but they do seem to offer a great value. I am not aware of any other fixed blade knives made from S35VN with a similar feature set in this price range.

Check out Freeman Outdoor Gear and see the knives at BladeHQ.
