E-Lander AR-15 Magazine Update from The Mako Group

The Mako Group recently posted an update on the status of their E-Lander AR-15 Magazines. They are slammed with orders right now but the magazines are still in stock with more coming and they are committed to keeping the prices at the same pre-panic level. I still don’t know a lot about these magazines but the initial reports are very promising.

Here is statement from The Mako Group regarding the status of orders, the availability of the mags, and how to contact them:

Update on your E-Lander magazine orders:

We are not answering phones.
Currently, every employee in our NY headquarters is packaging and shipping magazines to fill orders, from the CEO on down. At this point we are not answering the phones, as we are receiving enough calls to keep everyone busy full time just answering the phone. We had to make a choice between taking calls or shipping orders. The vast majority of the calls we have been receiving is from people who are calling to ask whether we do in fact have magazines in stock, and people following up their web order with a call to make sure that their orders are not backordered.

The answer to the questions most asked are:
Yes, we do have magazines in stock, and no one’s magazine order is backordered. We are not currently giving estimated ship dates, since that requires pulling up each customer’s order information and making an estimate. If we do this for everyone who asks, it will increase the time everyone will have to wait to get their orders shipped.

At this time we are not offering rebuild kits for CA customers. We simply do not have the time. This is something we are looking into for the future.

We are now shipping magazines that are not packaged in retail bags. The bags are included separately (for those who plan to resell the magazines) but packaging each magazine in a poly bag is an extra step that takes time away from the manufacture of magazines.

If you have ordered magazines, the magazines that you ordered are either in our warehouse waiting to be packed and shipped, or somewhere between our warehouse and your address. No dealer/distributor/manufacturer order will take priority over your order. We will not pull the mags that you ordered to ship them to someone else.

If you are planning to order magazines, we have them now – it will not be a backorder. We are receiving constant shipments of magazines from Israel and are packing and shipping thousands of magazines every day.

We have not and will not be raising our prices.

Better-Mag S&W .22 Rimfire Magazine Adapter from Redi-Mag

The Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 is an excellent .22LR training rifle in part because it has great magazines. The mags are inexpensive, reliable, easy to load, and have a bolt hold open feature. Redi-Mag seems to like the M&P 15-22 magazines as well because they created the Better-Mag S&W .22 Rimfire Magazine Adapter.

State of the Magazine Panic at Brownells

I was able to speak with a contact at Brownells yesterday regarding their magazine situation. I was specifically interested in hearing about their AR-15 magazines since many of you have been blowing up my inbox asking where to find mags.

First, let me say this. I know it is tempting to run out and buy a lifetime worth of AR-15 magazines, but I believe that you would probably be better off spending some time and energy contacting your Representatives to tell them how displeased you would be with new gun control legislation than spending time and energy tracking down magazines.

You have probably heard by now that Brownells sold a supply of magazines that would normally last them 3 years in just 3 days. Just about every magazine that they carry is out of stock. If you still want to buy, Brownells is allowing back orders at the same pre-panic prices and they have not placed any limits on how many magazines you can buy. They have handled this better than most large retailers and have even hired temp workers to help ship all of the extra orders!

They tell me that they have no idea when they will receive more Magpul PMAGs but they are holding their prices steady. Their PMAGs, like these PMAG 10 Packs are available to be back-ordered and will be fulfilled ASAP. If I am going to back order something, I like to do it from a place I trust like Brownells.

If you don’t want to roll the dice on when PMAGs will arrive, you can check out Brownells’ own USGI style mag. I have a handful of these and they are great mags. Brownells is assembling them as fast as possible and are purchasing more raw materials to continue cranking them out. There are no guarantees but these back orders may be filled relatively quickly. I am very pleased with how Brownells has handled this entire ordeal. I will remember this when The Great Panic Buy of 2012 is all over and I suggest that you do, too.

Low-Pro Products Light Mounts

A few years ago the light mounts from Danger Close Consulting were really gaining traction in professional circles. Unfortunately, they seemed to disappear as quickly as they came on the scene or at least that is how it appeared to me. What I didn’t know at the time is that the mounts that Danger Close Consulting sold were actually made by AMS Machine and they pre-dated the Danger Close Consulting brand. Thankfully, AMS Machine is now selling these mounts under their own brand – Low-Pro Products.

Low-Pro Products has several light mounts available but this review will deal specifically with 2 of my favorites – the Offset Flashlight Mount Scout and the Short Projection Flashlight Mount.

Overview

The two light mounts in this review are very different in form since they are designed to mount two very different lights but they have more in common than you can tell at a glance. The Offset Flashlight Mount Scout is designed to mount the Surefire Scout series of lights and the Short Projection Flashlight Mount can mount a variety of lights depending on the size. My sample is designed to mount lights with a 1.032” diameter like the Surefire G2 (there are also models for the Surefire E series and standard 1” lights).

Both are machined from aluminum with a black hard anodize finish. Low-Pro Products mills away as much as of their mounts as is possible without sacrificing strength so you will find large voids in both mounts that reduce weight. Both mounts also hold their respective lights very close to the rail. This is a hallmark of Low-Pro Products… hence the name.

Both mounts are made from a single piece of aluminum. There is no rail grabber that must be tightened to grip the rail. Instead, the mount slides onto the rail and there is a single set screw that pushes the mount away from the rail to keep tension. The screws have a small rubber pad on the base that helps it grip and prevents marring and loosening under recoil. It is a simple and very strong mounting system with an absolute bare minimum of moving parts. Prudent users will apply a dab of thread locker to the screw.

Observations from Use

The thing that I most wanted to know is that these were still the same mounts that I have come to know and love. I am happy to say that they are. Those of you who knew and loved the Danger Close Consulting offerings will find that all of the same quality and functionality that loved in the DCC mounts can be found in the Low-Pro Products mounts.

These mounts are extremely lightweight yet still very durable. Their lightweight may take you off guard at first. In the case of the Short Projection Flashlight Mount, it is actually lighter in weight than common plastic light mounts on the market. The Short Projection Flashlight Mount weights only 1 oz and the Offset Flashlight Mount Scout weighs only .8 oz.

Both mounts hold the lights very close to the rail. They are more low profile than most. In fact, the hold the light so close to the rail that the light may actually bump up against some rail covers. I had to remove a few sections of rail cover behind the Short Projection Flashlight Mount to leave room for the tail cap. The tailcap that I use is slightly oversized and would not install with the rail covers in place.

These mounts fit well on the Ultimak AK rails. They are low enough on the top of the rail to stay out of your sight picture and place the light well for support side thumb activation.

Wrap Up

These are great mounts and I really glad to see them out there on the market again, readily available. They are light weight, durable, and very low profile. Their design is strong and simple… elegant even.
