CDM Gear Mossberg Safety Update

You may remember our previous mention of the promising extended Mossberg safety that CDM Gear was developing. They have made major progress in the development of that safety since it was last featured on these pages.

We now know that it will retail for $19.95 which makes it competitive with other upgraded Mossberg safeties. We also know that the first batch has been anodized and is currently being tested by CDM Gear. These should be available at retail shortly.

These safeties are noteworthy for its shape that may allow it to be operated without breaking your shooting grip for some shooters. It also presents a large target for those who sweep the safety on and off with their finger tips much like an AK selector.  It is both wider than the factory safety switch and it extends back toward the buttstock. It’s shape actually moves the switch back toward the shooter’s weapon-side hand by about one inch. The extra length and the extra width in strategic places, should make it much easier to reach.

Keep an eye on CDMGear.com for details.

SHTF Gear Changes Name to Black Arch

The holsters are the same great holsters but the name has changed. SHTF Gear is now Black Arch.

Logan, UT – April 12, 2016 – SHTF Gear LLC, a manufacturer of hybrid holsters for concealed carry, announced today that it has changed its name to Black Arch Holsters. “With current growth and plans for new products, the timing was finally right to act on plans to change the company name” stated Clay Moultrie, president and founder.

The new name makes reference to the towering stone arches that are unique to the company’s home state of Utah. These natural arches were carved out of sandstone over thousands of years and are among the largest in the world. The name Black Arch pays homage to these silent giants who stand defiantly against all opposition and inspire greatness in design.

This change in name follows just weeks after the company announced that it had increased the size of its production facility by 33% in order to make room for new R&D equipment and a product showroom. This new equipment will allow the company to continue developing its current line of holsters while also pursuing new products.

Expansion of its facility and development of new products won’t affect current lead times, stated Moultrie. Black Arch remains committed to producing the highest quality of holsters and offering a lead time of only 3-5 business days. Additionally, the lifetime warranties of all SHTF Gear branded products will be honored.

About Black Arch

Founded in 2010, Black Arch Holsters (formerly SHTF Gear LLC) was launched to produce custom hybrid holsters for concealed carry. Black Arch continues to grow and develop new holsters and other products with the same focus on innovation, quality, and efficiency. The company’s name makes reference to the towering stone arches of southern Utah that inspire greatness in design. They can be found at BlackArchHolsters.com or contacted at (435) 261-2231.

Lightning Review: Spring Precision FASTMAG PMAG Couplers

I have been using Springer Precison FASTMAG PMAG Couplers for several years now and have arrived at the opinion that they are easily the best magazine couplers I have used. Certainly there are less expensive options but none of them offer the secondary benefits that the FASTMAGs offer.

Springer Precision FASTMAG

The reasons for using something like a magazine coupler on a home defense carbine are two-fold for me. Having additional capacity is certainly one of the reasons but there is one reason that is often lost in discussions like these – dealing with malfunctions. It has been said that most malfunctions are magazine related. I can’t back that up with science but I have found that to be true in my experience. A coupler gives me the ability to reload or switch to a new magazine during a malfunction clearance.

The Springer Precision FASTMAG does three things better than other magazine couplers. First, it has the least overall effect on the handling of the magazines. The front of the coupler has a cutout that conforms to the shape of the PMAGs. This allows the user to grip the magazine with a strong and completely uninterrupted “beer can” grip during a reload or while stripping a magazine. Most couplers strap the magazines around the middle which interrupts the grip.

Second, the FASTMAG places the magazines at the same level instead of staggering them which makes them act as a very stable base for prone shooting, more compact overall, and easier to handle. In my experience, this has not been the malfunction causing boogie man that it is made out to be. In fact, it has been a complete non-issue with more benefits than downsides. I start with the spare mag on the bolt release side of the AR so the ejection port is not obstructed when it opens at the first shot. Even if the mag is on the ejection port side, it can open enough that is typically won’t cause a malfunction. If it does become a problem (it NEVER has for me), the mag can be slightly flexed out of the way allowing the port cover to fully drop.

Finally, these have the easiest installation of any coupler I have tried. They install the same way PMAG base plates install – push button to slide off base plate, slide on coupler, reverse to remove. If can be done without tools in just seconds which means you can add or remove them easily as needed.

If you are looking for a functional and easy-to-live-with way to keep a spare magazine on your carbine, check out the FASTMAG Magazine Couplers from Springer Precision. These machined aluminum couplers are available for several different types of magazines and some even increase capacity.
