Weapon Outfitters 13.7″ TRACK Barrel

Weapon Outfitters has been a leading advocate for the 13.7″ AR-15 barrel for a long time now. Barrels of that length can be a great way to take advantage of the length of permanently attached muzzle devices like the B.E Meyers 249F or Noveske KX5. Weapon Outfitter’s latest 13.7″ barrel looks great on paper and it is worth a look for your next build.

The 13.7″ TRACK Barrel is a medium contour barrel that is constructed from 4150 Chrome Moly Vandium steel and Melonite processed for durability and corrosion resistance. It features a 1 in 7″ twist with a Wylde chamber. Wylde chambers are good to go with .223 or 5.56 spec ammo and can usually squeeze a bit more accuracy out of both. Correction: It is a 5.56 chamber.

These barrels use hybrid polygonal rifling by FJ Fedderson. Polygonal rifling usual give a bit more muzzle velocity due to a tighter gas seal and that tighter gas seal also allows Weapon Outfitters to go a bit smaller on the gas port which is a nice bonus.

Here is what Weapon Outfitters has to say about the rifling:

The patented hybrid polygonal rifling allows these barrels to use smaller than normal gas ports thanks to superior gas seals, and this method of rifling has been used to set accuracy world records.

Those are just words. They guarantee sub-MOA accuracy with quality match ammo. Check out the Weapon Outfitters 13.7″ TRACK Barrel. If you are like me, you are probably already picturing this barrel on a compact RECCEish build.

13.7″ Barrels and BE Meyers 249F at Weapon Outfitters

A handful of manufacturers have made 13.7″ AR-15 barrels for several years now. They have been predominantly used with a permanently attached Noveske KX3 Pig Brake to bring the total length to a non-NFA 16.1″ but that configuration never appealed to me due to the weight of the KX3.

Weapon Outfitters has found that the excellent BE Meyers 249F flash suppressor is long enough to fill the same role as the KX3 but it weighs significantly less and is one of the few flash suppressors out there that can come close to taming the flash on a short barrel. This configuration has a lot of potential for a compact, lightweight AR-15 build.

Weapon Outfitters offers the barrels separately or they can build a custom upper for you.

Cool Guy LPK from Weapon Outfitters

During the height of the Great Panic Buy of 2013, when lower parts kits (LPK) were hard to find, I wrote about assembling your own lower parts kit with premium parts. It made sense then because you could more easily find the individual premium parts than the full kits and it still makes sense because many shooters end up replacing most of the components of an LPK with premium parts anyway.

Weapon Outfitters has made it even easier to build your own LPK with the introduction of their Cool Guy LPK. It’s basically a lower parts kit that you can accessorize however you see fit by choosing various parts from Weapon Outfitter’s inventory. If you know you are going to upgrade your trigger, grip, selector from the get go, this may be the way to go.

Weapon Outfitters Heavy Buffer

Every one of my carbines has an H buffer (or heavier in some cases). Simply put, adding some weight to the cycling mass in your AR-15 can smooth the recoil pulse and increase the reliability of your carbine.

Weapon Outfitters Heavy Buffer

The Weapon Outfitters Heavy Buffer is one of the many H buffer options that are available. It is unique because it is filled with powdered tungsten instead of steel and tungsten weights as you would find in a typical H buffer. Some claim that the use of powdered tungsten further smooths the recoil pulse. Oh, and if you didn’t notice… it is bright red!
