RS Regulate AK-301M

There was a time when I would have said that AK side optic mounts were basically dead. They were usually poorly made, interfered with side folding stocks, may not have centered the optic over the bore, and were heavy. Then RS Regulate came along and turned the entire AK optic mount on its ear with their original side mounts. Their quality was second to none, they allowed the user to center the optic over the bore, were lighter than just about anything similar, and they had truly excellent ability to repeat zero.

RS Regulate would go on to further revolutionize AK side optic mounts with the introduction of their AK-300 series mounts (which replaced previous versions). These mounts were lighter than ever (lighter than they advertise), bull-strong, and featured an improved low-profile throw lever. These were perhaps the best AK optic mounting solution available… until now.

They have further pushed the evolution of the AK side optic mount with the introduction of the AK-301M. This replaces the AK-301 lower mount which is their furthest forward mounting solution which is ideal for red dot sights. The AK-301M’s design allows it to be lighter and more rigid than the legacy AK-301 lower mount. It is backwards compatible with all of the upper optic specific mounts like the AKML (Aimpoint Micro), AKM (30mm RDS), etc.

In spite of the overall improvement, the mount’s price remains the same. You can expect other RS Regualte AK-300 series lower mounts to receive a similar treatment over time as they move toward this second generation form. The AK-301M has already shipped to dealers will be available at retailers any moment now.

RS Regulate Developing MRO Mount for AK

RS Regulate is set to bring the new Trijicon MRO to the AK family of rifles. They are developing the AKMT, an MRO compatible upper adapter for their 300 series AK Side Mounts. The mount (both upper and lower parts) should weigh under 4 ounces which will be a great compliment to the lightweight of the MRO.

RS Products BM-12 and BM-12G Light Mounts

RS Products has released two new light mounts based on their BM-1 Light Mount. These mounts attach via a unique clamp that lets you decide what angle to set them and allows you put your light right where you need it.

The BM-12G is designed to attach to the magazine tube of a 12 gauge shotgun and the BM-12 is designed to mount to the barrel of a VEPR-12. These mounts are light weight at under 1.25 ounces for the BM-12G and 1.04 ounces for the BM-12. They machined from 6061-T6 aluminum, hard anodized, and feature a 4 slot section of 1913 rail.

VEPR 54R as a DMR?

I recently came across a post on M4Carbine.net that caught my eye. Scot, the head honcho of RS Regulate, started the thread and it outlined his plans for using a VEPR 54R chambered in 7.62x54R for a DMR project. It all sounds a bit like a modernized Dragunov to me and that is pretty darn cool. It also doesn’t hurt that 7.62x54R is still fairly widely available at low prices during this current ammo buying frenzy.

RS Regulate DMR

The RS Regulate VEPR 54R DMR build includes:

  • Vepr 54R 20″
  • Cut and crowned to 18.25″
  • Threaded 5/8-24
  • Surefire SOCOM 7.62FH
  • Krebs Vepr Rail
  • Vltor ModPod
  • RS AK-303 lower and AKR upper
  • Red Star Arms trigger set at 3#
  • Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10×32 FFP MIL/MIL
  • Magpul PRS stock

Interestingly enough, Snake Hound Machine has also been working on a very slick 7.62x54R project that was profiled on Four Guys Guns yesterday. The SHM build has more of a battle rifle bent to it than a precision bent like the RS Regulate project.

I am not sure what to think of all these slick 7.62x54R AK pattern rifles that are suddenly catching my eye. Maybe people are just really clever at finding ways to keep shooting during the ammo crunch or maybe the universe is trying to tell me I need a VEPR 54R DMR.
