SAR Global Tool – Maker of Knives, Detector of Metal

How cool is this? Spencer, over at SAR Global Tool (maker of the excellent ESS), is a bit of a renaissance man. He grinds cool knives, makes innovative search and rescue tools, and metal detects for historical objects. Now he and a friend have a blog called DUG (Discovered Under Ground) that chronicles their adventures in metal detecting and the stories are truly fascinating.

What are the odds that he will come across some survivalist’s cache of weapons? Now I wish I had time for another hobby.

Memorial Day

For about 150 years Americans have consecrated this day to remember the many heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives in defense of this great nation. We, the living, have a duty to never forget what it costs to keep our Republic free and enjoy the many benefits of living in these United States. The most important thing anyone can do to honor the memory of the fallen is to ensure their sacrifice was not made in vain. As you go forward this year and work, vote, reason, counsel and pray, do so with a vigor worthy of the men and women we remember on Memorial Day.

Be Heard: Trainer Choice

You guys didn’t turn out in big numbers for last week’s segment of Be Heard. You are going to have to come strong this week to make up for it.

This week, I am wondering what you think about choosing a trainer. The trainer could be a firearm trainer, first aid, knife, martial arts, or any other type of trainer that is within the scope of this blog. Should you choose someone who teaches techniques that are similar to what you already know so that your methods are reinforced or someone who has a different technique so that you are stretched? Which gives you greater potential to learn?

Appalachian Training

Appalachian Training is a small veteran owned business that carries gear for the armed professional and citizen gun owner alike. They are also the newest advertising partner on JTT.

Mike, the owner of Appalachian Tactical, has been a trainer for 25 years and he runs his business a bit differently than some. He will only sell gear in his shop that passes his personal test. He feels so strongly about this that he gives his personal promise.

I really appreciate the selectiveness and focus on training that Appalachian Training brings to the table and I am thrilled to have them as a partner on JTT. Check out AppalachianTrianing.com and be sure to visit their Facebook page.

Be Heard: Why Do You Train?

Last week we discussed whether organized firearm training was vital or poser-ish. Most people seemed to think that it was the mindset and motivation of those being trained, not the training itself, that dictates the value of the training. That sounds pretty fair to me and it brings up another question – what is your motivation and mindset when training?

Is your motivation just to defend yourself and loved ones? Do you train to be prepared for a Hurricane Katrina situation or “the end of the world?” Maybe you just train for fun, some other reason or combination of reasons. So, what is your motivation for training with firearms?
