Combative Edge 2012 Models

Combative Edge is known for offering knife designs that are grounded in the knowledge of what makes a defensive tool. Rob Walker, the man behind Combative Edge, is also an established edged weapon trainer and his knife designs are an outgrowth of his CEMAT system. These designs are also over-built enough to handle just about any utility chore you can throw at them all while costing less than a lot of comparable knives on the market.

Rob redesigned much of his line for 2012 and those knives are now available through his site. They were previously only available for pre-order but they are now in stock and ready to ship. Check out CombativeEdge.com.

Spartan Blades Akribis

Spartan Blades just dropped the new Akribis folding knife. The Akribis is Spartan Blades’ vision of a modern folding knife. It looks great and it has the spec sheet to match.

The Akribis features a 3.5″ long, 1/8″ thick S35VN blade and a titanium frame lock with a Rick Hinderer Lock Bar Stabilizer. The pocket clip is reversible for left or right side, tip-up carry. It is available with a grey ZrN coating or black PVD, Tungsten DLC. The handle scales can be had in your choice black G10 and black carbon fiber. Spartan Blades designed the coatings, scales, and sleek design to give the knife an upscale appearance that allows it to look at home in the pocket of tactical pants or a business suit.

Zero Tolerance JB1 and JB2 Shroud Cutters

I like to keep a shroud cutter/rescue cutter with my first aid gear and I am always on the lookout for a deal. A friend of JTT passed along that KnifeCenter has the Zero Tolerance JB1 and JB2 Shroud Cutters on sale.

The JB1 and JB2 have more features than the cutters that I usually use. They are made from 13C26 steel and have a DLC coating. The JB1 and JB2 feature two oxygen tank wrenches and a box wrench, a carbide glass breaker, and a very large cutting notch. They also come with a MOLLE style sheath.

Boker Plus Toucan

Multi-tools come in many forms. There are the typical pliers-based tools that are so common and the original Swiss Army Knives were multi-tools long before anyone knew the word “multi-tool.” More recently, a new breed of multi-tool has hit the scene. These tools are sometimes called pocket tools or keychain tools and one of the better known examples is the Toucan from Jared Price.

Boker now makes a product version of the Toucan in their Boker Plus line. It features a small knife edge, a pry tip, a screw driver, and bottle opener. The production version is made from 440C steel and features a small kydex sheath that covers the cutting edge so the user can open bottles or pry without the knife edge exposed. The whole package weighs a little more than an ounce and is around 3 inches long.

SCAR Blades

I like my knives simple. Knives are at their best when they are made from simple carbon steels, with functional handle slabs made from micarta, and a sheath that gives me as many carry options as possible. All of those things can be found standard on every knife that SCAR Blades makes.

SCAR Blades makes all of their knives from 1095 steel which is a personal favorite of mine because it is tough, easy to sharpen, and it can take a very refined edge. All of their knives have hand fit micarta handles and kydex sheaths. They also coat their knives for corrosion resistance.

SCAR Blades may be relatively new to the scene but they seem to have found a very good recipe for simple knives that work. Check out SCAR Blades on Blade HQ.
