Tactical Handyman – Kit Badger Edition: Make Your Own Inner Belt

Today’s Tactical Handyman post comes to us from Ivan at KitBadger.com, which has quickly become one of my favorite new outdoor and tactical gear review sources.

When solutions are not provided, do we go without, or innovate…?  For a number of years I had been disappointed with the lack of true low profile under/inner belts.  Backpacking, without some way of keeping your pants in place, results inevitably in the waist belt of your pack pushing your pants down.  Running around kitted up with a battle belt has the same results.

What does the Tactical Market offer us?  Buckles, stiff webbing, and a outer cover of male velcro ready to abrade jackets.  And the Outdoor Market?  Internal belts or sizing tabs (both with buckles) and usually really thin webbing.  And lets not forget that I might not want to wear a $299 pair of Gamma MX pants today.

So with a 1.75” wide piece of fairly light webbing, 12” of female velcro and 5” of male velcro…  I have the Inner Belt.  Anything with belt loops will be kept in place, no buckles to stack, no hot spots on the trail or the range…

Tier1-D – Gear for Dads Like Me and You

Tier1-Dad (Tier1-D) is a brand for dads and kids of the tactical persuasion. Their military gear inspired bags, apparel, and swaddles (yes, swaddles) are more than just a little slick. In fact, their gear is so good it has me thinking about having another kid since my youngest is just out of the toddler phase now and doesn’t require a diaper bag.

Tier1-D is the creation of Jack Osbourne who happens to be a shooter and a geardo which really shows in the designs. All of their gear is made in the USA and their bags are sewn by a veteran owned manufacturer.

Their apparel line features incredibly clever toddler shirts and 0nesies with a chest rig graphic.

I would have gladly traded all our cutesy pink baby swaddles for just one of their Multicam Swaddles!

Tier1-D’s bag line is especially interesting. Sure, the bags are designed to serve as diaper bags, especially when used with the option 3 Pouch Insert for bottles, diapers, etc. However, they would also make great EDC/range/office/travel bags once the kids are out of diapers. They have versatile organization features like laser cut Hank MOLLE panels on the exterior and loop lined interiors.

There are tons of tactical lifestyle brands out there but few have pulled it off with the level of style and authenticity I see in Tier1-D. These aren’t novelty items. They are actually hard use gear items designed by someone with a good sense of style who obviously loves this stuff as much as I (and probably you) do.

Whiskey Two Four – New Belt Products

Whiskey Two Four has rolled out a couple of new belt products that are extremely clever.

The Laser Cut Ultralight Belt Adapter is a specially cut piece of One-Wrap material that wraps onto a belt (optimized for 1.5″ width belts), turning it into an inner belt to accept a hook lined duty/outer belt. The wrap is thin enough to thread through belt loops while mounted on your belt. Now your favorite CCW belt can pull double duty as the inner belt on your “battle belt”.

They have also introduced Laser Cut Modular Belt Panels that turn any belt into a MOLLE compatible, load bearing belt. The panels attach to your existing belt and accept any standard MOLLE accessory. They are available in 2 sizes: 6 Columns and 14 Columns.

At just 4.4 pounds, RMA Armament’s newest plate is a real lightweight. They claim the new ALPHA Armor Series Level IV Plate is the lightest on the market.

For compliance to the NIJ 0101.06 level IV standard, a hard armor plate must defeat single .30-06 M2AP round with a BFD of less than 44 mm.
