Edge/Equipped

EdgeEquippedLogo125x125You may have noticed the Edge/Equipped ad that was recently added to the advertising panel on the right side of this site. Edge/Equipped is a small retailer that my wife and I started. We carry a variety of affordable items that are geared toward survival (you can read more about our broader view of “survival”) with most coming from small custom makers. All are items that we have used ourselves or that we recommend without hesitation.

Edge/Equipped is another way that we are living out JTT’s mission to shine a light on the mom and pop shops that are making really, really interesting stuff.

Check out Edge/Equipped and use code “JTT” to save 5%.

Exotac fireSLEEVE

The folks at Exotac have an amazing gift for product design. Their firesteels are some of the best thought out survival products around and a nanoSTRIKER has a permanent place on my key-chain because of that. They really do well at turning a simple product into a more functional package which is why I so thrilled to see their latest creation – the fireSLEEVE.

The fireSLEEVE is a cover for the standard Bic Lighter. The lowly Bic Lighter is used in survival kits frequently because of its ease of replacement, commonality, and reliability. The fireSLEEVE is designed to build on that functionality by adding useful functionality.

The cover is water-resistant and it floats so you should be able to shrug off just about any water related issue you could face. It protects the gas button from being depressed and draining your lighter fluid (a common problem when storing Bics in a kit) but also can be used to hold the gas button down preserving your thumb! Both the cap and the body have attachment points and the cap can be snapped onto the bottom of the fireSLEEVE when you are using the lighter.

It looks like Exotac has managed to create another ingenious, yet simple outdoor survival product.

Exotac is attempting to crowd fund the creation of the fireSLEEVE on Kickstarter.

On Blade Bomb: The TOPS Knives EL PATRON XXX

The new EL PATRON XXX from Tops Knives represents a more utilitarian approach to the karambit. It features a drop point blade shape rather than the typical hooked shape. The drop point may give up some of the ripping/catching potential of a traditional karambit in reverse grip but makes the knife more useful in a hammer grip. The EL PATRON XXX was actually designed to sit well in the hand and be useful in a normal forward grip.

This is also the first knife to feature TOPS Knives’ new “Tactical Stone” coating. The coating is a medium brown in color with texturing that has a stone like appearance. It contrasts with deeply grooved, Black G10 handle slabs nicely.

The EL PATRON XXX is ground from 3/16″ 1095 steel. It has a 3 1/2″ blade with a 8 5/8″ overall length. It comes with a handmade Kydex sheath.
