PenCott in Action

Hyde Definition’s PenCott Patterns are in use all around the world with many military and police units but it is rare to actually see the patterns in action. Recently, the elite Austrian SWAT unit “Einsatzkommando COBRA” was photographed wearing PenCott GreenZone while apprehending a poacher who murdered a paramedic and 3 police officers.

Velocity Systems

If you follow JTT, you know that I regularly highlight patches from around the industry as part of our Patch Collecting feature. This one is going to be a little bit different because I am going to highlight both a patch and a tremendous customer service experience that I had. I’ll start with the customer service experience.

I recently purchased a Velocity System Light Weight Plate Carrier (LWPC) from Appalachian Training. One of the key features of the LWPC for me is the ability to keep it completely slick but still tuck away a few AR-15 magazines in the elastic magazine pouches that are sewn into the interior face of the cummerbund. However, when I received the PC I noticed the two elastic mag pouches were sewn unevenly so that the two slots closest to the center line of the wearer (the two most useful pouches) were undersized and could not fit magazines easily.

The Velocity Systems LWPC's cummerbund features integral magazine pouches.

I contacted Appalachian Training and Mike, the owner, immediately returned my emails as usual. He didn’t have a replacement on hand but he confirmed that his personal cummerbund was sewn the same way. So I contacted Velocity Systems using the email address that I found on their Facebook page. That email was responded to in less than 5 minutes and the experience only became more impressive from there.

I was corresponding with Pat Quinn, a VP at Velocity Systems. This is when something that I have never seen happened. Pat acknowledged that it sounds like there might be a production issue with that size cummerbund. Not only that, be he tasked someone with looking into the issue and taking care of me. At that point, I was handed off to Russell, a sales coordinator, who quickly and professionally took care of me by dropping a new cummerbund in the mail which I had in hand in about 3 days.

It was very refreshing to see a company 1) actually acknowledge that there may be an issue and 2) delegate the task of addressing at both the production level and with the individual customer. The whole process was personal and seamless.

Now, onto the patches…

Velocity Systems Patches

Velocity Systems tucked in a couple of their patches with the replacement cummerbund. These patches feature Velocity System’s stylized “V” logo. One is subdued and the other is rendered in full color. I like the full color one because the color scheme reminds me of something you might see on one of those awesome ’70s custom vans.

Check out Velocity Systems at VelSyst.com. Stay tuned for a full review of the LWPC after I put some more time on it.

New Gear from MSM

Mil-Spec Monkey just dropped some new gear and it is always worth taking a look at what the Monkey unveils.

The MSM Notebook Cover is a minimalist approach to covering and and organizing your 3″ x 5″ notebooks (Rite in the Rain and others). This simple design allows you to keep a couple of pens and pencils handy, along with a few business cards. It just slips on to one of the notebook’s covers and the Hypalon material prevents it from sliding off too easily.

The MSM Stealth Compact Pouch is a compact version of the MSM/Tactical Tailor Stealth Admin Pouch. It features 2 internal pockets with built in organization and, of course, a generous loop field on the front. It is the same height as the original Stealth Admin but it is narrower side-to-side and front-to-back. This narrower design allows it to mount on just 2 columns of PALS which makes it just about ideal for using on the high center of a plate carrier to keep the sides of the plate and shoulder pockets clear for your carbine’s buttstock. It also works well on the side of a pack where there is often only 2 or 3 colums of PALS webbing available.

LMT Leaving Illinois

While it may be increasingly common for firearm manufacturers to take their jobs and tax revenue to states that are not legislatively antagonistic toward their business, the difficulty and sacrifice involved in making such a move should not be overlooked. Many of these companies are making a real stand should be applauded. It appears that LMT may be one of the next companies to leave an anti-Constitution state for greener pastures.

The Ares Armor Derma Plate Carrier is one of the most interesting new plate carrier designs to come around in a while. Its most interesting feature is its use of a unique 3 strand elastic cummerbund with custom AustriAlpin COBRA Buckle closures. Each of the elastic strands is individually adjustable and the buckles should make for extremely easy donning and doffing.

The Derma PC will be made from 1000D Cordura nylon and be available in 2 sizes to accommodate most plates. It also features a maritime quick release system.

The Derma Quick Release Plate Carrier is available for pre-order at PredatorARMAMENT.
