Swedish FireKnife from Light My Fire

What happens when you combine the excellent quality FireSteels of Light My Fire with the well known, high value knife maker, Mora of Sweden? You get the Swedish FireKnife.

The Swedish FireKnife is a Mora Knife that has a FireSteel stored in the handle. Light My Fire FireSteels are among the best I have ever used and Mora Knives are extremely well known for their value. So, this a match made in heaven. The knife weighs only 3.3 ounces, features a 12C27 steel blade, and a rubber over-molded hard plastic handle. It also comes with a hard plastic sheath and is available in a variety of colors.

Like a typical Mora Knife, the Swedish FireKnife costs less than you might think. Check out the Swedish FireKnife on LightMyFire.com.

What Makes a Knife Tactical?

“What makes a knife tactical?” is a common question among knife users everywhere. Some insist that there is no difference between a regular knife and a tactical knife – that the current use dictates how tactical it is. Others point out that there are some common threads among knives that are intended to be “tactical.” If ever there was a subject matter expert on what makes a knife “tactical” it would be Ernest Emerson who practically invented the tactical folding knife.

Mr. Emerson recently wrote an article entitled “10 Things That Make a Tactical Knife” that can be read at the DailyCaller.com. When Ernest Emerson writes, I read it.

Knife Sharpening with a Creek Stone

Matt Lesniewski of ML Knives recently posted a video that shows him using smooth stones from a creek to sharpen knives. The video is tremendous and I can testify that this does work. Apart from showing a couple of basic techniques for sharpening on rocks, this video highlights a couple of things for me. First, a lot of people over think and over spend on sharpening equipment. Second, simple carbon steels really excel for field knife use. You can use this technique on modern stainless steels but it will be more difficult.

Check out MLKnives.com to see more of Matt’s knives. I have had the pleasure of owning several of them over the years and they were all excellent knives.

FEROX Folding Knife from Maxpedition

You already know Maxpedition for their EDC bags and pouches, but with the introduction of the FEROX Folding Knife, they are ready to dominate yet another portion of the EDC market.

The FEROX manages to pack a lot of features into a relatively inexpensive knife. The handles are made from textured fiber-reinforced nylon and are available in black, OD green, and khaki. The liner locking 5Cr13 stainless steel blade is hardened to 56/59HRc and is blackened for a low-profile appearance. The FEROX also features a tip down pocket clip and a guard/flipper for easy opening.

Cold Steel Secret Edge w/ Bladerigs IWB sheath

Bladerigs is now offering Cold Steel Secret Edge knives that have been customized and fitted with their excellent sheaths.

The customizations that have been performed on these knives turns them into compact defensive knives that are somewhat reminiscent of the Tracker Dan BloodShark. The handle is removed, reshaped, and then cord wrapped. The result is a thin, concealable handle that gives the user tactile feedback about the edge orientation and keeps your hand from slipping up onto the edge.

The sheath is the excellent minimalist IWB rig. This sheath allows a multitude of carry options in addition to inside the waistband. It works especially well tucked into a belt loop horizontally near the wearer’s center-line.
