Review: UCWRG Rifle Grip

The way we hold our carbines has changed over the years but the gear been slower to adapt. Many users are squaring their bodies to the target, pushing their support hands out closer to the muzzle to gain more control and moving the carbine in toward their centerline while keeping the strong side arm tucked into their side. Longer hand guards have evolved to accommodate different support hand grips but less has been done to address the issues with strong hand positioning on the pistol grip in a “modern” stance.

We have only recently started to see a crop of pistol grips with a more vertical angle that takes stress off the wrist in this modern stance. The Umbrella Corporation Weapons Research Group (UCWRG) Rifle Grip is one of the most recent offerings of this type and it is the subject of this review.

Overview

The UCWRG Rifle Grip is a study in simplicity, but don’t be fooled, there is a lot going on here. There are no storage compartments, interchangeable cores or grip panels, and no texture. This is just a grip and that is a good thing.

The grip is made from polymer. The polymer that UCWRG chose feels very sturdy and appears to have a fair amount of glass reinforcement for durability (I stippled one of the test grips and it had the characteristic “crunch” of well reinforced polymer).

It appears that the grip has no texture at first glance, but when you have it in hand, you can feel the light pebble texture. It isn’t much, but it is there. UCWRG purposefully chose to leave this grip free of texture so the user can add their own. Future grips from UCWRG will have a more aggressive texture.

The main draw here is the ergonomic features which are simple and effective. This grip has a more vertical grip angle than most AR grips. It has various swells and ledges in strategic places that make it more hand filling than you might think by looking at it.

The UCWRG Rifle Grip comes with everything you need to install it – the grip and a quality grip screw with a Phillips screw.

I should also mention that UCWRG consulted with Magpul in the development of this grip. You can see the finger prints of Magpul all over this design, and, in many ways, it looks and feels like a cross between the Magpul MOE Grip and MOE K Grip.

Observations from Use

I am thrilled to see a Phillips screw versus the standard slotted screw. The internal drive Phillips screw makes keeping the driver on the screw easier and Phillips screwdrivers are easy to source just about anywhere. This is a small thing but it saves time and sanity.

If you find this grip to be too slick (many people will), you can easily add texture. UWCRG intended for you to do so. You can get as involved as you want to. It is easy to stretch a piece of bicycle tire inner tube for a quick and immediate improvement. The squared shape of the grip makes it easy to cut and fit adhesive grip tape. You can also do what I did and heat stipple the grip.

The sizing of the grip is spot on, at least for me. The grip manages to feel like it is fitting to your hand without resorting to pronounced palm swells or finger grooves. I especially like the well-executed, subtle thumb shelf that is molded into the sides.

It builds out behind the receiver a bit which helps move the trigger finger back and into a better position. This is nice because many of more vertical grips on the market are not very hand filling in this area. The part of the grip that extends up the lower receiver and interfaces with the web of your hand does force my hand a bit lower than I would prefer. It would be nice if this area of the grip was more tapered rather than remaining full thickness and which prevents the hand from going higher.

The UCWRG Rifle Grip is a full size grip in terms of length. This is not a short grip like other similar grips.

I installed these on 3 different carbines for testing. I have had some wrist injuries in the past and, as a result, I almost always come home from the range with a numb feeling in my hand when using most AR grips. This is from having my wrist cocked into an uncomfortable position while shooting a carbine in the stance described above. The wrist just isn’t meant to be held at the edges of its range of motion for extended periods of time (or at least my wrists aren’t). The UCWRG Rifle Grip is vertical enough that I haven’t had any numbness or discomfort during the entire time that I have used them. It is like magic.

Don’t think that this grip is no good for you because you don’t shoot in the described position. I also tested it in a more tradition bladed stance and found it more comfortable there too. Additionally, a few people with patrolling experience that tried the grip have commented on how much more comfortable it is to keep your hand on the grip when the carbine is hanging down in front of you on your sling like it might be when patrolling.

When I was explaining the grip to a friend, he wondered why he should consider this grip since he shoots a GLOCK, which has a more raked back grip angle, without issue. The difference lies in the angles of the arm when holding a rifle versus a handgun. The strong side elbow is much lower than the wrist when holding a rifle. This is what creates the off wrist angles. The wrist angles it takes to shoot a GLOCK effectively have nothing on what your wrist is doing when you contort it onto a rifle with a pistol grip.

Wrap Up

The UCWRG Rifle Grip has allowed me to spend a day at the range without pain in my wrists. I don’t know that your results will be as dramatic but I am sure that you will find the grip angle more comfortable than most AR grips. UCWRG Rifle Grip represents a simple, straight-forward approach to building a grip that offers plenty of flexibility. It offers a combination of price, hand filling design, and vertical orientation that you just can’t find anywhere else right now.

Sub-$60 Muzzle Brakes

I recently wrote an article that revolved around the idea that practice can help you reduce and control muzzle rise more than a $100-400 muzzle device and that muzzle brakes make good shooters better; they don’t turn poor shoopers into good ones. A few of you pointed out that you don’t need to spend $100 on a muzzle device. While I don’t think the availability of relatively inexpensive muzzle devices changes the truth of the article, it is certainly worth taking a look at some muzzle devices that won’t break the bank.

All of the muzzle brakes/compensators mentioned below are devices that I have used and that cost less than $60 retail (much less in most cases). This is not a complete list of sub-$60 muzzle devices…

Cavalry Arms Cav Comp – The Cav Comp has been around for what seems like forever and at less than $30 it is easy to see why if you try one. It works quite well at keeping the muzzle level. It is loud but not the loudest comp that I have tried. It also tends to be fairly flashy (more than an A2 flash suppressor but less than a bare muzzle).

Manticore Arms NightBrake – The NightBrake is available for AKs and ARs. The AK version is impressive in that it is at least as effective as the AKsevntifur brake with less flash and less tooth rattling shock wave. It is also designed to create some back-pressure so it make take the place of a booster for some SBR AKs. I have limited time with the AR version but the experience was much the same as with the AK version. It is well balanced in terms of flash, concussion, performance, and price.

PWS Triad – The PWS Triad is an interesting device. It is the only device on this list that isn’t a compensator or muzzle brake. It is actually a flash suppressor that uses some unique internal geometry to redirect muzzle gasses in such a way that muzzle rise is reduced without the concussion of a brake or compensator. In my experience, it keeps the muzzle down but doesn’t do much for recoil so, if you don’t have a good feel for how to completely control all phases of recoil, the carbine will still move around a bit.

Carlson Comps Carlson Comp – The Carlson Comp looks a bit like an AK 100 series brake for the AR but there is a key difference in the performance. The Carlson Comp directs more of the noise and concussion upward rather than to the sides. It isn’t quiet but it also isn’t as harsh as other comps to those who are standing to the sides of the shooter.

Levang Linear Comp – The Levang Linear Comp is fairly unique among the devices listed. It does reduce muzzle rise a bit but its main mission is to redirect sound. It pushes concussion and sound forward which makes the lives of the shooter and those around the shooter much more pleasant. It does not reduce sound. It simply redirects it. These are popular for use on an SBR to redirect the concussive sound from the shorter barrel away from the shooter.

Rainier Arms XTC – The Rainier Arms XTC is a bit of a hybrid device. It has properties from both a compensator and a flash suppressor. The result of the mix of features is a device that suppresses flash fairly well and controls the muzzle very well. It seems to suppress flash nearly as well as an A2 flash suppressor and it is on the loud side. I find this to be very well balanced in terms of muzzle rise mitigation.

Rainier Arms Mini Compensator – This is also somewhat unique among the devices listed due to its incredibly small size. It is very light weight and very compact. I found that it was fairly loud and a bit flashy but it was also very effective (more effective than many other larger devices that I have tried).

All of the devices listed above will help a shooter who has a trained to a proper grip and stance keep the muzzle very flat. However, shooters who do not already have a degree of muzzle control built into their technique will find that the muzzle will still move quite a bit with just about any muzzle device. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a great muzzle device but you do have to spend the time it takes to get the most out of it.

Review: Mission First Tactical TEKKO AK47 Integrated Rail System

The TEKKO AK4 Integrated Rail System is a polymer hand guard for the AK family of weapons that offers several configuration options. It is a drop-in replacement for the standard hand guards that has a top rail, 2 removable side rails, and a bottom rail.

All of the rails are made of polymer. The top rail is integrated into the gas tube cover. The side rails are removable and there is a single spot to attach them on either side of the hand guard. The lower rail is integrated into the lower hand guard. It features a nicely textured cover that matches the shape and feel of a standard hand guard without a rail when it is in place. It is pretty clever.

The polymer feels sturdy – not cheap. I also noted that every screw that is used to secure the various pieces of the TEKKO Hand Guards screw into a metal nut instead of plastic. My sample required some slight fitting, but it took just seconds to do with a rotary tool and likely had more to do with the receiver of the AK that I installed it on than the dimensions of the TEKKO Hand Guards.

Observations from Use

The bottom rail is my favorite part of the TEKKO Hand Guards. If you don’t need it, you can cover it and the hand guard will feel as if there is nothing there at all. If you do need it, it can be a great place to mount a vertical grip. Just be sure that the vertical grip is mounted far enough forward or is trimmed short enough that it does not interfere with rocking the magazine in and out.

The side rails are most useful mounting a light or a sling mount. I use the sling mount on the hand guard retaining cap so I was free to use the rail for light mounting. This works well with some caveats. You will likely need to use an offset light mount if your AK has a sling loop on the hand guard cap. If your light mount is very thick, it may interfere with the sling loop on the left side of the AK. I fixed this easily by using the sling loop as a place to mount a Blue Force Gear UWL. Also, lights mounted on these side rails can take up a lot of space on the hand guard so you will either want to use a vertical grip or put the light on the opposite side with a tape switch to keep the hand guard clear enough to hold easily. Much of how you configure the side rails will depend on your shooting style. There is enough flexibility here to accommodate most people.

The top rail is tied into the hand guards with 4 long bolts that screw into metal nuts in the lower hand guard. This configuration seems sturdy and it did allow an RDS to hold zero in limited testing. However, I do have some reservations about keeping an optic on the polymer rail long term and it does sit higher than I prefer so I generally do not use the top rail piece. If you are going to use this top rail for optic mounting, I would limit it to a very lightweight optic. Again, it held up fine in my limited testing. The light weight optic advice may be paranoia based on previous experiences with polymer rails.

There is no metal heat shield in the lower hand guard. I did not have any issues with heat or melting but I also didn’t do any mag dumps. It would be nice if there was a heat shield but many hand guards are fine without them.

Wrap Up

I like and continue to use these hand guards almost entirely because of the bottom rail. The rest of the features are useful but I especially like having a lightweight way to attach a vertical grip. They offer quite a bit of flexibility at a lower weight and cost penalty than many metal rails. I should also note that they are made in the USA so they can help meet your 922R compliance requirements.

Smith & Wesson M&P Pro Series C.O.R.E. Handguns

Smith & Wesson recently introduced the M&P Pro Series C.O.R.E. handguns through the S&W Performance Shop. The Pro Series C.O.R.E. have the ability to accept a number of different compact red dot optics. This adds S&W to the very short list of manufacturers who have offered their handguns configured to accept an RDS from the factory.

The M&P Pro Series C.O.R.E. handguns allow the user to mount the following RDS: Trijicon RMR, Leupold Delta Point, Jpoint, Doctor, C-More STS, or Insight MRDS. There is some speculation that the mounting system that allows all of these various optics to be mounted is similar to the Atom Mounting System from Unity Tactical. However, it appears that the optic sits a bit higher with the S&W mounting system.

The trend toward mounting RDS on handguns certainly seems to be gaining momentum.
