Cavalry Manufacturing SCAR MK17S PMAG Lower

It looks like SCAR MK17S shooters are going to have some options when it comes to using PMAGs with their MK17S. Many of your are likely already familiar with the billet aluminum Handl Defense lower that allows the SCAR MK17S accept PMAGs but there is now a another manufacturer throwing their hat into the ring – Cavalry Manufacturing.

You might see the Cavalry Manufacturing name and think polymer but this lower will be made from aluminum. Unlike an AR-15 the lower receiver on the SCAR is not the serialized receiver so it can be purchased without having to go through an FFL. This is also why Cavalry Manufacturing, who no longer holds an FFL, can manufacture these receivers.

CrossTac RECON Shooting Mat

Most shooting mats are way too formal for me. I don’t do a lot of true precision shooting so I often don’t really need all the features that a hardcore shooting mat offers. However, there are times when it would be nice to have a lightweight ground covering when I am on the range. The RECON Shooting Mat from CrossTac looks pretty much exactly like what I envision as my perfect shooting mat.

It features 2 ply 500D nylon construction. The nylon is polyurethane coated for water resistance. One side of the mat is Multicam and the other is A-TACS AU so you can blend into a variety of environments. Both sides feature what CrossTac calls their Bipod Rail which is a clever piece of sewn down webbing that gives you something to load your bipod against while shooting. The RECON Shooting Mat also has large grommets at each corner so it can be staked down in windy conditions. I could also see something like this serving as an emergency shelter or ground cover.

The Lowly A2 Flash Suppressor

I will not fault anyone for chasing the perfect muzzle device. I spend a lot of time talking about and testing muzzle devices on this very page. In fact, you will see at least 2 new devices tested in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, in our rush to swap out parts for the latest and greatest, we can often miss a great muzzle device that is right under our noses (and practically free) – the lowly A2 flash suppressor.

A2 Flash Suppressor

The A2 flash suppressor is actually a very good muzzle device for a number of reasons. Certainly there are devices out there that do the same things as the A2. Many devices do some things better than the A2. However, I am not sure any device is as well rounded as the A2 for so little money.

Reason #1: The A2 is actually a very good flash suppressor. It isn’t as effective as the AAC Blackout or the White Sound Defense FOSSA-556 but it holds its own.

Reason #2: It is quiet. As compensators and muzzle brakes flood the market, people are spending more and more time talking about how noisy each device is. The A2 is not the quietest device on the market but it certainly quieter than just about any comp or brake. It won’t rattle the teeth of those shooting near you.

Reason #3: It is compact. Many of the best flash suppressors are fairly long. The A2 flash suppressor manages to be fairly effective but still very compact. It also has a closed end that prevents snagging which may be an issue with some pronged flash suppressors.

Reason #4: It is nearly free (kind of)! No one buys an A2 flash suppressor. They come installed already on a complete upper receiver group or complete AR-15 or you bum one off a buddy who just spent his allowance on a new muzzle device. Even if you did buy one, it wouldn’t cost much at all.

Other considerations:  The A2’s closed bottom reduces muzzle rise slightly and reduces ground signature. There are sound suppressors available that mount directly to the A2. It works with muzzle caps.

I am not saying that the A2 is the ultimate muzzle device. I am saying that it is a very good one and that your money might be better spent on other things like training or additional amm0, rather than a more expensive muzzle device that you may or may not have the ability to get the most out of.

Don’t be in such a rush to throw away that A2 flash suppressor!

Vortex Optics Viper PST 2.5-10×32 FFP

Vortex Optics has really impressed me with the value of their Viper PST line. One of the newest additions to that line is the Viper PST 2.5-10×32 FFP. This is a fairly compact 2.5-10 magnification range optic that looks like it would be right at home on a light precision AR-15 build.

The Viper PST 2.5-10×32 FFP features a first focal place reticle so that you can range targets and have consistent hold overs throughout the entire magnification range. It has matched turrets and reticle measurements so you don’t have to do any conversions on the fly (you can choose between MOA or MRAD models). Speaking of turrets, this optic has customizable zero stops and you can even order custom ballistic matched turrets through Kenton Industries. The reticle is etched and illuminated.

I am really just scratching the surface on this optic. It looks like a whole lot of optic for the $899 MSRP (street prices will probably be around $800). Check out VortexOptics.com.
