New from KDG: MREX – AR MLOK Modular (AR) Rail and Kinect QD MLOK Mounts

Kinetic Development Group has announced their first accessories for a rifle other than the FN SCAR. Their new AR MLOK 11.63″ Modular (AR) Rail will be available to mount on your AR-15 some time this month or possibly next month. This MLOK compatible rail weighs 8.5 ounces and has 2 integrated QD sling swivel sockets. The rail has MLOK compatible slots at 2, 3, 6, 9, and 10 o’clock.

The line of Kinect QD MLOK Mounts that KDG has announced to support their new rail may be even more interesting than the rail itself. The Kinect line is MLOK compatible and features a unique auto locking mechanism that allows tool free mounting. Kinect mounts features 2 spring loaded wedges that are automatically triggered when the mount is pushed into the mounting slot. This secures the mount and all but completely removes the possibility for human error (over tightening, improper engagement, etc). The announced line includes various lengths of 1913 rail, an offset rail, a bipod mount, a Surefire Scout compatible light mount, and a very slick offset Aimpoint Micro mount.

Black Canyon Labs SGS3

The Black Canyon Labs SGS3 is unlike any safety switch for Remington and Benelli shotguns that I have seen. It turns the cross bolt safety into a 90 degree throw lever switch much like an AR-15.

SGS3-5 SGS3-4

If you spend most of your time shooting an AR-15, this could make a lot of sense. The selector on your shotgun would work exactly like you are used to on your AR-15 and it would be in a similar location when used with a pistol grip stock. This could simplify your training. I don’t have a law enforcement background but I suspect this could be attractive to LE trainers and decision makers looking to simplify the transition between different types of firearms for their students.

The SGS3 is designed to work with a pistol grip equipped shotgun. It is available to fit both Remington and Benelli shotguns. Check it out at Rally Point Tactical.

AR Pistols Aren’t An SBR Replacement…

AR pistols are not an SBR replacement… And that is a very good thing.

JTT AR Pistol 1

The hubbub surrounding the ATF’s opinions on shouldering the Sig SB15 Pistol Stabilizing Brace seems to have thrown a bucket of cold water on last year’s fever pitch AR pistol excitement. Now more than ever, it is clear that AR pistols are not the SBR analog that people want them to be and they never will be as long as the ATF says you shouldn’t shoulder them. I have owned my AR pistol(s) for quite a while now. I continue to enjoy training with it and shooting it. I won’t be giving it up anytime soon.

Certainly, the way owners shoot AR pistols may change based on the opinion letters, but I think many of the downers are being short sighted in writing them off completely. They can still do things some useful things that an SBR can’t…

  1. Pistols can usually be carried loaded in a vehicle under the owner’s CCW permit. This is not the case with rifles in all jurisdictions.
  2. Pistols can be carried across state lines without having to notify the ATF (via form 5320-20). This is especially nice if you, like me, live near state borders.
  3. The obvious one is that you don’t have a tax stamp and $200 tax tied up in it like you would an in SBR.
  4. Finally, there are still states and jurisdictions that do not allow residents to own SBRs.

To be clear, I am not saying AR pistols are better than SBRs because they aren’t – they’re different. It is probably better to think of AR pistols as an entirely different animal than an SBR, rather than a replacement. They offer different capabilities and have different strengths. When I stop looking at what I’ve been told I can’t do with an AR pistol and start looking at what I can, I wonder why everyone who has more than a couple AR-15s don’t have an AR pistol at their disposal.
