President Barack Obama handed down 23 executive actions and several proposals for new gun control legislation yesterday. While many people are likely breathing a sigh of relief after the executive actions were viewed as fairly mild compared to what many thought would happen, it is important to note that the the proposed legislation are far from mild. The proposals, which include universal background checks, a ban on certain assault weapons, magazine capacity limits, would represent a severe restriction on your 2nd Amendment freedoms.

Get involved now so that we can have 200 more years of American Liberty!

So, while many of you are taking a deep breath, now is not the time to stop working. This is just the beginning of the next phase. The President has made his wishes known and now it is time for you to make yours known. He and his supporters will now be working on gathering votes and compromising but you need to let your Representatives know that you have no interest in new legislation or compromise.

I don’t want to discourage you from calling or sending personal letters to your Representatives, but there is no easier way to contact them than to use Ruger’s website.

I recently engaged in a conversation regarding upcoming gun control legislation in which I was told that “No hunter should need more than 10 rounds to bring down a deer!” That is probably true but it has absolutely nothing to do with the topic of the 2nd Amendment. If you follow JTT on Facebook and Twitter you know that I keep harping on this point and are probably tired of it but… it keeps coming up.

The American people have been sold a lie. The government, media, and various special interest groups have steered the conversation so effectively with fear and misinformation that it is rare that hunting doesn’t come up in a discussion of the 2nd Amendment.  The American History that we all learned in school can be so easily replaced with the American History that is re-written daily on TV and online. Anyone with even a passing knowledge of how the United States of America came to exist can grasp the true meaning and importance of the Second Amendment with just a few moments of critical thought and yet hunting and the 2nd Amendment remain irrevocably linked in the minds of the American public.

I hope you are doing your best to kindly and respectfully educate whoever you can on the importance of the 2nd Amendment and liberty in general. As long as people continue to believe that the 2nd Amendment has anything to do with hunting, it won’t be worth fighting for in their minds.

They have also made it easier than ever for you to let your voice be heard in the political process. They have created a website that can contact all of your Representatives at once. It is very, very slick. You simply enter some information that the site uses to determine who your Representatives are and the site does the rest – it copies all the relevant email addresses, drafts the letter, and then provides a spot for you to sign it. It could not be easier.

Vice President Joe Biden made comments today stating that President Barack Obama was prepared to use an Executive Order to erode the right to keep and bear arms. This would be the most divisive way possible to enact new gun legislation and would flout the Constitution on many levels. Our founders never intended for laws to be handed down unilaterally in this manner. This is the very definition of tyranny (Webster’s states: a government in which absolute power is vested in a single ruler).

It is more important than ever that you get involved in the process of preserving your rights. Press your Representatives to give you real answers on where they stand on the 2nd Amendment. Let them know that you will not accept any new legislation or compromise. Remind them of the turnover that happened after the ’94 Assault Weapons Ban was enacted and that mid-term elections are just around the corner. Don’t forget to contact your state government to ask them if they are prepared to stand between you and a Federal Government that has gone rogue.

While we do not yet know the scope of what Vice President Biden is suggesting, the very thought of this should renew your efforts to get involved in the political process. The Vice President’s statements today should be a call to action for those of you who have been sitting idle until now. Start making yourself heard!
