Now Available: BA Hanson .625 Barrels from Ballistic Advantage

We first told you about the new, lighter BA Hanson profile barrels last week. They are now available.

The original BA Hanson profile was designed to make AR-15 barrels more lightweight without some of the associated downsides of lightweight barrel profiles. However, the original BA Hanson profile barrels have a .750 diameter at the gas block and are really more of a light/medium contour. Clint Hanson, the creator of the BA Hanson profile, wanted to take what he learned from those barrels and apply it to a true lightweight barrel. The result is the new BA Hanson .625 profile.

The original BA Hanson profile’s shoulder-less design and smoother tapers creates a barrel that has some harmonic advantages over most typical barrel profiles. That, coupled with their penchant for being conservative with their gas port specs, creates a lightweight barrel that stays very flat under recoil. Clint Hanson found that he was able to port these very same design elements over to the new lighter BA Hanson .625 barrels and achieve a true lightweight profile “without the lightweight limitations”.

The BA Hanson .625 barrels are so called because they have the traditional .625″ diameter at the gas block. Each barrel comes with a pinned, low-profile gas black already installed which makes them an excellent value. Initially, these barrels are only available in Ballistic Advantage’s Premium Wylde chamber line in lengths of 10.3″ (carbine gas), 14.5″ (mid-length), and 16″ (mid-length). The profile will eventually be available in the Premium Series as well but there is no ETA on those barrels at this time.

These barrels should be pretty exciting for those who are looking to build lightweight precision carbines. A traditional pencil barrel is already a better barrel profile than it gets credit for, at least in terms of accuracy and harmonics. These BA Hanson .625 barrels, with their improvements and quality, should be a step up.

Ballistic Advantage Barrel of the Week – 16″ .223 Wylde, Premium Series, BA Hanson Profile

This is the Ballistic Advantage (BA) Barrel of the Week that I know several of you have been hoping would come along. This week’s barrel is BA’s 16″, .223 Wylde, Mid-Length, BA Hanson profile, Premium Series with a pinned low-profile gas block included!

I own this barrel and it is a performer. I consistently see better than 1″ groups at 100 yards with Prvi and Black Hills 75gr ammo. The best groups hover around .85″. On top of that, it is noticeably lighter in weight than a government or typical medium contour barrel. BA tends to be very conservative on their gas ports so this barrel shoots very flat on its own but especially when paired with a Griffin Armament M4SD Flash Comp and Vltor A5 System.

This barrel is on sale this week for just $185.29. That is a very high performing, 416R stainless barrel with a pinned low-profile gas block included for less than $200! I am pretty sure this is a sign that you are supposed to start that RECCE build you have been thinking about…

New, Lighter Hanson Profile from Ballistic Advantage

The Hanson Profile barrels from Ballistic Advantage (BA) were designed to be a lighter weight barrel without some of the limitations typically encountered with lighter weight barrels. However, the original Hanson profile with its continuous taper and lack of right angles is really more of a medium contour barrel compared to a true “pencil” barrel.

lightweight hanson

Clint Hanson and BA have just released details of a brand new, true lightweight Hanson profile barrel. The new profile is lighter and features the same continuous taper and lack of right angles. You can basically think of this as an even lighter version of the original. The principles at play in the original Hanson profile should also work hear helping to reduce whip and produce solid accuracy.

Being a true lightweight profile, it features a .625″ gas block journal. It will initially be available in BA’s Premium Series (416 stainless, 1 in 8″ twist, and NiB barrel extension) but will eventually be offered in the Performance Series as well. 10.3″, 14.5″ mid-length, and 16″ lengths are planned.

These barrels will also come with a 1 MOA guarantee which is a pretty bold move for a lightweight barrel profile. They will be available soon at Ballistic Advantage.

ACI 7.5″ Barrel Special – $140 with a Pinned Low Profile Gas Block

I purchased a 7.5″ 5.56 chambered AR-15 upper a while back mostly for fun but also see what, if any, purpose a super short 5.56 could serve. I purchased that upper from Andro Corp Industries (ACI) and it has been a solid performer. I wrote two articles about the experience that chronicled some of what I found – Times of Have Changed: Why You Might Actually Want to Try a 7.5″ 5.56 AR-15 Build and a response to the more silly reactions to the article 5.56x45mm Fired From a 7.5″ Barrel is Just a Glorified .22LR. I can tell you that, while super short 5.56 guns are not an ideal barrel length/caliber pairing, they are a lot of fun and they are far better than some would lead you to believe.

One of the biggest reasons I finally decided to try a 7.5″ build is the availability of affordable 7.5″ barrel options that actually worked. ACI builds their uppers with Ballistic Advantage (BA) barrels who takes great care getting these short barrels to run without the horrific over gassing that seems to plague cheap barrels of this type. ACI is also a dealer for BA barrels and that leads me to the point of this already long-winded post…

ACI has a special on the Modern Series 7.5″ barrel from BA right now. This is a 4150 barrel that has been Melonite QPQ processed inside and out. It features a 1 in 7″ twist and pistol length gas system. It also comes with a pre-installed low-profile gas block that has been pinned in place. This is a great start to any 7.5″ build and it is on sale for $140 which is a steal.
