LMT Defense Announces MARS-L Fully Ambidextrous Rifle Platform

MARS-LS Barrel Right

From LMT Defense:

MILAN, ILLINOIS – January 18, 2016 – LMT Defense is excited to announce they are releasing the Modular Ambidextrous Rifle System – Light (MARS-L), the most modern ambidextrous M4 ever.  The MARS-L platform was designed in response to a foreign military requirement to field a fully ambidextrous weapon system with complete symmetry and commonality of controls so that users could manipulate the weapon from either side in the same fashion.  This weapon now proudly serves the New Zealand Defence Force.  The MARS-L can first been seen at the 2016 NSSF SHOT Show in booth #20249 and is expected to start shipping at the end of the first quarter of 2016.

The weapon is fully ambidextrous with LMT Defense designed and manufactured: Ambi-Safety Selector Switch; Ambi-Magazine Release Button; Ambi-Bolt Catch/Release Paddle; and Ambi-Charging Handle. All have been tested and vetted by both military and law enforcement agencies.  The ambidextrous features allow an operator to perform more operations from either hand including catching the bolt with the right index finger so as not to remove the hand from the grip.  To achieve this, the new lower forging design includes the bumps for the Ambi-Bolt Catch/Release Paddle, Ambi- Magazine Release Button and Fence Well. The lower forging also includes a flared magazine well that assists the operator in locating the magazine during insertion.

The modular weapon design is available in Semi-Auto (LS) or Select Fire (LA) models with 14.5”, 16”, 18” and 20” barrel options and can be fitted with the CQB® upper to accommodate a 10.5” barrel. The weapon also includes eight QD locations – five on the front rail, one in the end plate of the lower receiver and two on the stock. The weapon is “lightweight” in that it is designed for smaller rifle calibers: 5.56mm, .300 Blackout, .204Ruger, and 6.8 SPCI.

Finally, the MARS-L utilizes LMT Defense’s monolithic upper receiver to ensure the straightest and strongest rail in the industry. The one piece aluminum forging also allows for the longest barrel extension in the industry which contributes to the greatest weapon accuracy on a production scale.

The CQB16-MARS will retail for $2,347.90.

Sentinel Design Glock Magwells are Back Thanks to Raven Concealment

I have been a long time user and fan of Sentinel Design’s Glock Magwell. Sentinel Design came out with their magwell for the Glock 17 a few years ago and began talking about a Glock 19 version not long after. The G19 version didn’t happen and eventually even the G17 magwells became hard to find which is a shame because they were an excellent product (see our review).

FREYA Mag Well

It has been announced at SHOT Show that the Sentinel Design Magwells will go back into production, this time under the FREYA product line produced by Raven Concealment Systems. The FREYA Magazine Well for Glocks will be available for the Gen3 G17 like the original and a new Gen4 G17 version will be produced. Perhaps the most exciting development is that the FREYA Magazine Well is already in production for the G19 (both Gen3 and Gen4) with additional models coming soon.

Austere Provisions Company already has a active pre-order pages for the Gen3 G19 and Gen4 G19 versions of the FREYA Magazine Well.

Good Gear: Magpul MOE 1911 Grip Panels, TSP

I have owned several 1911s over the years. At one point, I was shooting and carrying them exclusively (until I got tired of the maintenance as my yearly round count increased). Eventually I sold them all and moved into Glocks – a soulless gun that I have never loved like a 1911 but that I appreciate for its workman like performance. Last year, I decided that I needed at least one 1911 in the collection for old time’s sake and to stay proficient. It also seemed like a good reason to try Magpul’s affordable 1911 grips.

I like my handguns to have fairly aggressive texture. Texture can help make up for injury diminished grip strength, aids recoil control, and helps deal with sweat/mud/blood/gun oil. I chose the MOE 1911 Grip Panels with Magpul’s TSP texture. The TSP texture is excellent. It’s pointed trapezoidal (TSP stands for Trapezoidal Surface Projections) texture elements are as aggressive a texture as you will find on a factory produced item. The TSP texture, along with the somewhat angular cross section (more of a triangular cross section than a typical half circle) of these grips does a great job of locking the 1911 in your hand.

Polymer, while a little low-rent in perception, is actually a great material for grip panels versus something like wood or G-10/micarta. Durable polymer allows for aggressive texture at a low cost, light weight, and without being as grabby to your covering garment as something like G-10. Magpul’s polymer always seems to hold up well and, while the grips aren’t quite as sharp as they were a year ago, they are still very aggressive. 1911s are heavy to begin with so saving a little weight in the grip is a welcome feature, as is the low price.

The overall design of these grips is excellent, especially the deeply dished out magazine release relief that is molded into the grip. There is no texture in this area so your thumb isn’t abraded as you move it to the mag release. It is deeply dished out from the back of the grip all the way to the front which should allow a wide variety of hand sizes to more easily access the magazine release without shifting their grip much.

I don’t typically like to talk about looks but on a classically handsome gun like the 1911, it is bound to come up. These grips look great on the right gun… to me, at least. They are going to look a little strange on a classic, blued Gold Cup but they look right at home on a modern, “tactical” 1911. I mostly don’t care how they look since they offer the function that I want at very affordable price.

I already own a pair of excellent micarta grips but, if I didn’t, I would have a hard time justifying the price of them over these Magpul grips. These are truly functional grips and a very affordable price. Put your fancy wood grips in the safe for special occasions and pick up a set of these.

Armaspec XPDW 5 Position Collapsible Stock

Armaspec’s new XPDW 5 Position Collapsible Stock is one of the most affordable PDW style stocks on the market. It also mounts to a standard carbine receiver extension which means there is no need for a proprietary recoil system but also that it will not be quite as compact as other PDW style stocks on the market.

From Armaspec:

Armaspec, manufacturer of the Rhino R23 Magwell Funnel, AST90 assisted safety selector and TCB extended mag release, is pleased to announce the new Armaspec XPDW 5 Position Collapsible Stock.

The Armaspec XPDW 5 Position Collapsible Stock is a completely new take on the PDW stock. This design allows the end user to easily install the XPDW stock with no modification to the AR with the exception of simply removing the standard AR-15 stock.

The Armaspec XPDW 5 Position Collapsible Stock also completely breaks the mold when it comes to the affordability by coming in at an unbeatable MSRP of just $179. XPDW units are currently in production and on display at SHOT Show 2016 booth number 3348. Stop by and check out our newest creation. We are accepting orders now.

Streamlight ProTac Rail Mount 1 and 2

Streamlight just introduced two new rail mounted lights that appear to be intended as competition for the Surefire Scout series of lights. The ProTac Rail Mount 1 and ProTac Rail Mount 2 are single cell and double cell (respectively), rail mountable version of Streamlight’s popular ProTac lights. Both lights feature integrated rail mounts, anodized aluminum construction, a tempered glass lens, and tape switch or push button tail cap compatibility. Both lights are also user programmable with a choice of three operating modes: high/strobe, high only, and low/high.

The ProTac Rail Mount 2 boasts 625 lumen output for 2 hours. The ProTac Rail Mount 1 can be run off of a AA battery or a CR123A and, because of the differences in voltage, it has a different output level depending on the battery type. It boasts 150 lumens for 1.5 hours with an alkaline AA (4.5 hours on a lithium AA battery) or 350 lumens for 1.75 hours with a CR123A.
