New Intel: MI AK Railed Gas Tube

Yesterday’s news about Midwest Industries’ new AK Railed Gas Tube has been generating quite a bit discussion and several emails. Midwest Industries published a series of images today that shows the gas tube installed and they should go a long way toward clearing up some of your questions about how it actually attaches to the host rifle.

The images show how the steel nut on the muzzle end of the gas tube adjusts to mate with the gas block while tension screws at the rear of the gas tube push against the barrel to fix the entire gas tube in place. This set up should be lighter in weight than railed gas tubes that make use of barrel bands but only time and testing will tell the whole story.

The AK Railed Gas Tube is available for standard AK/AKMs with models for the Yugo M70, M85 PAP, and M92 PAP coming soon. Check it out at Midwest Industries.

It should also be noted that there is no shortage of AK mags at MI HQ! I bet they swim through them like Scrooge McDuck.

Minuteman Watches – Help Pick the Next Fixed Blade Knife Design

Minuteman Watches, in addition to their line of watches, will occasionally partner with a knife maker to offer an exclusive knife. Like their watches, 25% of the net proceeds from the sale of these knives goes to veteran’s charities. Their next knife project is going to be a small fixed blade that will be designed and created with the help of Justin Gingrich, former Army Ranger and head honcho at Gingrich Tactical Innovations.

They have whittled down the knife designs to just three and now its up to you to help decide which design to produce. You can visit the project page at Minuteman Watches to learn more about the project, projected pricing, and how to vote (its easy).

Here are the three versions being considered:

mm2 mm3 mm4

Regardless of the design chosen, the specs will be similar:

  • Blade length: 2.5″ hollow ground.
  • Handle length: 3″ (This may increase slightly but the idea is to get at least 3 fingers on the handle.
  • Blade Thickness: 1/8″ (Might be bumped up to 5/32″)
  • Blade width: 1″
  • Blade Steel: M390 (Might switch to S35VN the cost for both steels is about the same and performance is similar.)
  • Sheath: Kydex set up for neck carry, waist carry, and pocket carry.
  • Blade finish: Bead blasted. (This may change but we will not coat is as the cost will go up and we are already using a stainless steel.)

Again, visit the project page for information on how to vote.

What’s In a Logo? – Deliberate Dynamics

Have you ever looked at a company’s logo and wondered what in the world it was supposed to be/mean/represent? I have. Deliberate Dynamics recently posted an explanation of their logo which I found meaningful and interesting.

Here is the logo in question:

Deliberate Dynamics Logo

It turns out that the logo is an amalgamation of something familiar and unfamiliar to me. The familiar element is the fang-bearing snake from the Gadsden Flag. The unfamiliar element is the the Nyinkyim, an Adinkra symbol from West Africa, that means “initiative, dynamism and versatility” – good concepts for a gear company that prides itself on being progressive.

Are there other companies with logos you have wondered about? Put them in the comments.

White Sound Defense FOSSA-762 – Testing Effects on Accuracy

White Sound Defense has conducted some testing with regard to how their FOSSA series of flash suppressors effect the accuracy of the firearm that they are mounted on. They posted images that came out of the test showing that the FOSSA-762 seems to have little effect, if any, on the particular precision bolt-action rifle used for testing.

It has been my experience with AR-15s that, as long as the muzzle device is properly torqued (a good reason to use shims instead of crush washers), the effects on accuracy are marginal and hard to measure. This test conducted by White Sound Defense may not be scientific but it shows anecdotally, that your accurate rifle will remain an accurate rifle with a FOSSA attached to it.

If you are looking for a very effective flash suppressor that can also reduce muzzle rise, the FOSSA series of muzzle devices are a great choice.
