The OTHER Reason to Carry a Spare Magazine

“If you need more than X rounds, you shouldn’t be there in the first place!”

“If you can’t solve the problem with X rounds, you shouldn’t be carrying a gun!”

“What do you need all that ammunition for?”

I don’t actually carry a Makarov, but if I did, I would use this Black Rhino Concealment mag pouch to carry a spare magazine.

If you have ever discussed the idea of carrying a spare magazine in some circles, you have likely heard one or all of the above statements. People often struggle with the idea that you might have to empty an entire magazine and then load new one before continuing to shoot in a defensive situation. If the commonly stated statistics about how many times people shoot in the “average” gunfight are to be believed, they may be right to be a little incredulous… or at least they would be if increasing your firepower was the only, or even the most important, reason to carry a spare magazine.

What causes the majority of malfunctions in a good quality firearm? In my experience, that would be magazines that decide to go rogue and bad ammo is in a not too distant second place. You often can’t tell which mags and ammo are the bad ones from looking so the best way to fix a magazine or ammo problem is to get rid of the offending magazine/ammo and replace with new magazine/ammo.

Think about how you fix a double feed. After you rip out the current magazine which is likely bound in the gun under significant tension because of the rat’s nest in the chamber, would you rather reinsert it or grab a fresh magazine from your belt? I know what I would rather do.

The above statements miss the point, or at least part of it. Increased capacity is only one of the reasons to carry a spare magazine. The other reason is to correct a malfunctioning firearm. Think about it.

If you keep a rifle at hand, consider some way of keeping a spare magazine on the rifle like a magazine coupler (Springer Precision shown) or FastMag.

Review: TacPack April 2017

The April 2017 TacPack has landed. If you are an EDC gadget lover, you’re going to dig this one. Lets look inside!

Hopefully you are familiar with the concept of TacPack by now. If not, you can read the reviews of the previous TacPacks for some background on this subscription box.

KeySmart EDC Kit – There are two items from KeySmart this month. The first is a very cool keyfob that is made to wrap duct tape around so you can always have a small roll of I-can-fix-anything Tape with you. It comes preloaded with Gorilla Tape which is a nice touch. KeySmart also included one of their Nano-Wrenches which is very cool. It is a tiny keychain gadget that can be used to turn flat head screws and several sizes of nuts/bolts. These items were my favorites in the box.

Armaspec Titanium TakeDown Pins – If you are planning an AR-15 build, these will be handy. If you have an already built AR, you can add some bling. This TacPack is the very first time these pins have been available so you can be the first kid on your block to have them.

ABKT Tactical Cleaning Kit – Having a spare cleaning kit never hurt anyone. This one comes with several brushes, mops, a pull cable, and more. The case is a little cheap but it actually organizes the components well. Drop it in a range bag or emergency bag and go.

Splatter Targets – Everyone can use more targets. These Splatter Targets are the type that show hits well enough to see at distance. They are a useful size and will come in handy at the range. I was glad to see them in the box.

If you want to try TacPack, you can check them out at TacPack.com. The May box will include some items of HexMag among other things.

New AR15 Barrel Tease from Sionics

Sionics Weapon Systems is testing a new 18″ stainless barrel with black Melonite finish. Their previous 18″ stainless barrel had a bead blast finish and was well known for providing excellent accuracy. If the new barrel can provide the same level of accuracy along with a more durable and less bright finish, it should be a winner.

CDM Gear AK Light Mounts

CDM Gear is moving their BC47-1 and BC47-2 AK47 light mounts into production. These light mounts clamp to the barrel and provide a flashlight ring for for use with a 1″ diameter light. The mounts are machined from 6061-T6 aluminum and have an anti-rotation design so the mount will not turn on the barrel. They also have a cleaning rod hole so you can keep the standard AK cleaning rod on board.

The BC47-1 positions the light below the bore axis. The BC47-2 places the light above the bore axis.

These mounts will be available soon with pricing expected to be below $40.
