UW Gear Expands APC Chest Rig Options

UW Gear has expanded their line of APC Chest Rigs. You can read our previous entry about these rigs for background but basically, they are UW Gear’s first foray into all-MOLLE chest rigs. The APC rigs were previously only available in a compact chest rig format but the line has been expanded to include an all MOLLE version of UW Gear’s popular Swamp Fox Chest Rig that features an 8×3 PALS grid on each side of the split front panel.

The APC Rigs are still not a regular catalog item for UW Gear so if you want one, you will need to contact John at UW Gear.

Crowdfund This: SPARtool

SPARtool is an “outdoor survival multitool” that is currently on Kickstarter in an attempt to crowdfund its production. There have been a number of these types of tools over the years but this one caught my eye because of its light(ish) weight and quality materials. Usually these sort of “survival” multitools are poorly designed and poorly made from junk steel. On top of all that, they are usually heavy.

The SPARtool is made from 1075 carbon steel – a steel that actually stands a chance of holding an edge for chopping and sawing tasks and that will be easy to resharpen in the field with a file or stone like you would an axe. It is relatively compact already so there is no need to add collapsible mechanisms or detachable parts that can fail under hard use. The Zytel handle should be basically shock-proof while also keep weight and cost down.

SPARtool

In many backpacking situations you are likely already carrying at least a shovel to deal with waste. You probably also carry some sort of cutting tool whether it is a hatchet, knife, or both. The SPARtool may be able to handle all of that for you with the addition of its other functionality though you may still want to carry a small knife. This tool certainly isn’t for the ultra-light crowd but if you don’t mind being at least a little bit geared up while you are the trail, it could be handy.

This could also be a great addition to a car kit. If you live in a colder, somewhat remote locations like I do, you are likely already carrying a shovel and some basic survival tools in your car.

Watch Deals at Smith & Bradley

Smith & Bradley is offering deep discounts on two of their most popular watches. These deals are limited to 100 units each and, during the holiday shopping season, they will likely go fast.

The Sans-13 is my favorite “tool” watch. You can check out my previous review. I wear it on the range, while splitting wood, or any other time I need a watch I trust to stand up to a beating. It also happens to be on sale for $199 which is impressive for a watch with great lume, a Swiss movement, a sapphire crystal, and a case this tough.

S&B is also offering their Ambush watch at a discount of more than $100 off ($530). I wear an Ambush daily and have really come to appreciate its dual time capability as someone who works across multiple time zones. The on board compass is one of the most complete I have seen in a watch with its easily adjustable declination and user settable heading function. It is a great daily watch and a solid companion in the field.

Inlayed Aegis Buckles – Coming Soon from Mean Gene Leather

The Ares Gear Aegis Buckle in its many forms is already the classiest “tactical” belt buckle out there. That is doubly true when the Aegis Buckle is paired with a Mean Gene Leather (MGL) belt, but you haven’t seen anything yet. MGL is about to take the Aegis to a whole new level of classy with the introduction of Inlayed Aegis Buckles to be paired with their leather belts.

The buckles will feature wood inlays like Koa, Maple, and Walnut as well as carbon fiber for a more modern look. The wood inlays are all stabilized and have a Tru Oil gloss finish. These buckles will be available on new belts and owners of existing belts can contact Mean Gene Leather to have one retrofitted to their current belt.

1919A4 Belt Fed Semi Auto .308 at LWD

Let’s do a thought experiment. I am going to ask you to think of Lone Wolf Distributors (LWD) and then tell me the first firearm that comes to mind…

It probably wasn’t a 1919A4 Belt Fed Semi Auto .308, was it?

LWD is now carrying 1919A4s that are built on original US GI parts that were modified by Israeli Military industries to operate in .308 caliber. Each 1919A4 is then torn down, inspected, worked over, fluffed, buffed, and tested for reliability by master gunsmith and 1919 guru John McGuire.

You know you want one.
