Vortex Defender Flip Caps

The new Defender Flip Caps from Vortex Optics were one of the best things to come out of the lead up to SHOT Show 2016. Scope caps aren’t sexy but these will be a welcomed addition to the current scope caps on the market… most of which are either garbage, proprietary, expensive, or some combination of those attributes.

The Defender Flip Caps feature beefed up polymer construction versus other caps on the market. They have a spring loaded opening feature and can then be snapped into different positions depending on the user’s preference. They will also be compatible with Vortex’s new Dope Disk which is a dope chart that fits inside the cap and can be customized via their free LRBC ballistic app.

Best of all, these are made in the USA and covered by Vortex’s excellent warranty. I have high hopes for these.

Condor Tool & Knife CLOUDBURST AXE

Condor Tool & Knife has built a line of axes and hatchets that are known for offering an excellent value. They have taken steps to grow and improve that line over the last several years. The latest addition, as of SHOT Show 2016, is their CLOUDBURST AXE.

62705

The CLOUDBURST is fairly unique configuration in the axe market. It combines a classic American axe head shape with a somewhat Scandinavian Forest axe size. It is smaller than a typical American boys axe but larger than a hatchet. The result is an axe that packs well when lashed to a pack but can be used for processing larger firewood.

It comes with a leather sheath and a leather guard which is a very functional and classy touch. The 0-1060 carbon steel, phantom beveled, head weighs in at 1.5 pounds and has been designed to split the difference between chopping performance and splitting performance. The 23″ haft is American Hickory.

Red Oktober Kalashnikov Championship

The AK has come a long way in the US market since I first started shooting at least in terms of perception and aftermarket support. It used to be perceived as a battle rifle for bubbas who didn’t want to spend on something better and there was no use developing high-end accessories for $200 rifles – the bubbas wouldn’t buy them. Now the AK is seeing a resurgence in popularity and a golden age of development that is dragging the Kalash into the future.

As more and more people find out that the old stamped steel workhorse is capable of more performance than they have been told over the years, they are understandably looking to find the limits. That can only mean one thing. It’s time for an AK-centric practical shooting competition. Enter the Red Oktober Kalashnikov Championship.

The Red Oktober Kalashnikov Championship is a shooting competition that will be held on October 29-30 at the Southern Utah Practical Shooting Range in St. George, Utah. It will have a class system like any other practical rifle competition and the rifles employed will be limited to Kalashnikovs and some other combloc weapons. The match will be held over two days on a half-day schedule and will have room for up to 200 shooters. It will consist of 10 courses of fire (2 at night, 8 daylight) spread over the two days with a round count of 350.

The rules are already being hashed out. Karl Kasarda, of InRange TV and various other practical rifle events in the southwest, and Jim Fuller, of Rifle Dynamics, have provided input on the rules and structure of the event. With Karl’s experience hosting practical firearms competition and Jim’s guru-level AK knowledge, this is shaping up to be a great event.
