Suarez L-Mount RMR Red Dot Base for Glock

Suarez International has release the L-Mount RMR Red Dot Base for Glock handguns. This mount allows the user to mount a Trijicon RMR and does not require permanent modifications to the host firearm. The L-Mount’s unique feature is that it is designed to accept any standard Glock sights and place them at the correct height to co-witness with the red dot. The rear sight can be adjusted for a perfect co-witness by drifting it in the dovetail.

The Suarez L-Mount RMR Red Dot Base is available now at an introductory price. About half of those available at the introductory price have already sold over night.

Looks pretty similar to the RCS Balor mount.

Yes but this is everything the balor mount wants to be. Why the hell would anyone want to mount an Aimpoint to a glock.

You obviously didn’t see the Baylor mount for the RMR. This is yet ANOTHER example of how SI rips off other people’s ideas.

There have been instances when I have removed posts from JTT for items that were brought to my attention as copies or IP infringements. I simply can not know about every product so your comments/emails are VERY helpful in this regard and I appreciate them.

In this case, I expected that there would be a gut reaction that this is similar to the RCS Balor but I decided to publish in spite of that for 2 reasons.

The first, and probably most important, is that I know that this mount was being developed at SI before the public release of the Balor mount at SHOT Show. I suppose it is possible that the Balor was common knowledge before that but I don’t believe that to be the case.

Second, this offers a unique and useful functionality among similar mounts with its replaceable and windage adjustable sights.

The main reaction seems to be toward it being a Balor copy but the Dueck Defense unit preceded the Balor. Aimpoint and others made rear sight dovetail mounts for mini red dots previous to that. There were even mounts with integrated rear sights (Sight-Mount Rear Sight) and even a mount that attached both the dovetail and slide plate AND had an integrated rear sight (Strike Industries).

RCS has been toying with the Balor since at least 2013. I got to see and use one that Matt Jacques had at one of his classes.

That is great. I trust it will be a fine piece of gear as usual from Raven. I have purchased several of their products and will continue to shop with them. That said, I think this is a bit of a tempest in a teapot.

I grant you that it is possible that a representative of SI gained access to those prototypes during that time. It seems unlikely but it is possible. For what its worth, SI and a few people unaffiliated with SI but close to them have claimed that the L-Mount (previously called Project X) has been in development before or around 2013 as well.

It seems to me that what people are reacting to is the way the L-Mount attaches to the slide plate as a secondary anchor because the sight set up is clearly different. However, that slide cover anchor feature isn’t original to the Balor. As I said in a previous comment, I didn’t post this lightly because I anticipated the reaction. Here is what can be quantified…

Strike Industries introduced their Rear Sight Red Dot Mount for Glocks in Dec. of 2012 (that was the release date of an official video on their Youtube channel, it was likely shown previous to that). It incorporates a rear sight AND attaches via a screw to the slide plate as a second anchor. That second anchor point looks to have been unique to them at the time.

Before that, a product called the Sight-Mount Rear Sight existed which lacks the slide plate anchor but also incorporates a rear sight.

Mounting red dot sights in the rear sight dovetail isn’t new either. Aimpoint and others have made mount to do this.

I don’t care to defend SI. You can consider this more of a defense my decision to post about this particular product. The above shows that the Balor mount itself may have been influenced by EXISTING products. It isn’t a copy of an existing product but it’s slide plate anchor concept isn’t original to it. No one is expressing outrage for Strike Industries.

Obviously, this is a purely hypothetical thought, but if the companies were reversed the reaction would probably be different. People have very strong feelings about Suarez International. I suppose that speaks to the reputation of both companies.

I wasn’t trying to say this was a copy at all which seems to be what people took my original comment as. All I was doing was pointing out they are similar and I know the attach to the slide plate design isn’t new my dad had a Glock with a Docter optic mount that for in the rear dove tail and had some sort of dovetail I to the slide cover plate in the early 2000s.

I am partial to RCS however tho and will get a couple Balor mounts for the Glocks I run the most because I’ve found that the 4 RMRs I’ve mounted on my pistols as robust as they are I’ve had issues with everyone flickering or just dying at around 6000-8000 rounds fried through the gun hoping a T1 will last longer before it starts developing problems.

Brian, have you contacted Trijicon regarding the RMRs? I think they have been making inline improvements to deal with some of the earlier reliability issues.

          • Brian March 12, 2016 at 21:12 #

Oh yea Trijicon has taken care of me every time I’ve had an issue. The 2 most recent ones I’ve got are both around 6k and haven’t shown any sign of issue so no doubt they are constantly making tweaks to the design to increase their service life while mounted on a handgun.

And it’s actually more of a rip off of the Dueck Defense RMR mount
